Anthropic expands Claude access for scientific research

Anthropic announced on August 27, 2026 that it is opening 10,000 Claude seats for scientists worldwide through a new Claude team plan for scientists, while also broadening its AI for Science credit program beyond its earlier emphasis on biological research.

This is a research-access and product-program expansion, not a new Claude model release. Anthropic says the first participants have already enrolled and that it intends to expand the scientist program beyond the initial 10,000 seats over the coming months.

Standard seats are free for one year

Anthropic says standard seats in the scientist team plan will be free for one year. Premium seats with five times the usage limits are offered at $15 per month. To register a lab, the applicant must be a principal investigator or equivalent at an academic or nonprofit research institution; once verified, that person can add researchers in the lab to the plan.

The program is global according to Anthropic's announcement. Researchers whose needs exceed the included subscription usage can separately apply to the AI for Science program for additional credits.

AI for Science expands beyond biology

Anthropic says its AI for Science program has so far largely supported biological-science projects, but it is now seeking applications from researchers in other scientific fields as well, including compute-heavy work. The company states that any researcher is eligible to apply to the credit program, which can provide up to $50,000 in credits per project.

That expansion sits alongside Claude Science, a product Anthropic launched in June. Claude Science is designed around research workflows, including commonly used scientific tools, auditable artifacts and access to computing resources. The new announcement therefore expands access to an existing scientific-AI product and program rather than introducing a replacement model family.

Dual-use restrictions remain for biology and chemistry

Anthropic also makes an important limitation explicit. For now, researchers working in biology and chemistry remain limited to Opus-class models under the relevant research-access arrangements. Anthropic says Claude Fable models will continue to block professional biology and drug-development queries because of dual-use risks.

The company says it is working with the U.S. government on an access program that could allow life-sciences professionals to use Mythos-class models for research and development. That program is described as work in progress, not generally available access today.

These restrictions are important context because the headline 10,000-seat expansion does not mean every researcher receives unrestricted access to every Anthropic model or capability. Model access can vary by field and safety policy.

Why this matters

The most consequential part of the announcement is the attempt to move advanced AI research tools from individual experiments into lab-level scientific workflows. A verified principal investigator can create a team plan, add lab members, and potentially combine subscription access with larger project credits. That structure could make sustained AI-assisted research more practical for academic and nonprofit groups that otherwise face usage-cost constraints.

The expansion also gives Anthropic a larger real-world environment in which to observe how scientists use AI across disciplines beyond biology. At the same time, the explicit dual-use controls show that broad scientific access is being paired with capability restrictions in higher-risk areas.

The correct status is: the 10,000-seat scientist program and expanded AI for Science applications are open now according to Anthropic; the intent to grow beyond 10,000 seats and the U.S.-government-linked Mythos life-sciences access program are future plans.
