ChatGPT Business changed additional-seat billing on August 19, 2026: what workspace owners need to know

OpenAI changed the timing of charges for additional paid standard seats in self-serve ChatGPT Business on August 19, 2026. The change matters to workspace owners who add people during an active monthly or annual subscription because the prorated charge now happens when the seat is added rather than being deferred to a later bill.

What changed on August 19

According to OpenAI's official ChatGPT Business billing guidance, an additional paid standard ChatGPT seat is now charged immediately for the remaining time in the workspace's current billing period. The seat becomes available after payment completes. From the next billing cycle onward, that seat is included in the workspace's regular subscription charges.

OpenAI says the overall amount paid for the seat is unchanged; the change is to when the charge occurs. No action is required from existing Business customers, and OpenAI says other billing and payment terms remain unchanged.

For monthly workspaces, additional standard seats are charged immediately on a prorated basis for the rest of the current month. For annual workspaces, additional seats are charged immediately on a prorated basis for the remaining portion of the annual billing period.

Why workspace owners should notice the timing

The practical effect is cash-flow timing. A workspace owner adding several paid seats should expect the prorated amount to be charged at the time of purchase rather than waiting for a later true-up invoice. OpenAI's billing page advises owners to review seat counts, billing information, and workspace settings before adding or removing members.

This does not mean the new seats cost more solely because of the August 19 change. OpenAI explicitly states that the same amount is paid overall and that only the timing of the charge has changed.

Separate rule for Codex-only seats

The August 19 billing change applies to additional standard ChatGPT seats. OpenAI separately changed eligibility for usage-based Codex-only seats on June 24, 2026. New ChatGPT Business plans, and Business workspaces that had never added a Codex seat before June 24, cannot add a first Codex-only seat. Workspaces that had a Codex seat before that date can continue to manage and add eligible usage-based Codex seats.

Standard ChatGPT seats are different: OpenAI's current documentation says they include ChatGPT access plus baseline Codex access and are billed at a fixed per-user subscription price.

What to check before adding seats

Workspace owners can review the current paid-seat count and billing information in ChatGPT Business workspace settings. When budgeting for team growth, account for an immediate prorated charge when a standard paid seat is added during a billing period, then the regular subscription charge from the next renewal.

Because OpenAI can update product and billing rules, organizations should verify the current Help Center guidance before making a large seat change or relying on a specific billing workflow.
