Gemini crosses the one-billion monthly-user mark

Google says the Gemini app has surpassed one billion monthly active users, a significant scale milestone for a general-purpose AI assistant. The company describes Gemini as the fastest-growing product in its history.

Usage is becoming more multimodal

Google's August 11 update says 63% of users now talk directly to Gemini, while one in five Gemini Live interactions uses more than voice, including live camera feeds or screen sharing for real-time problem solving. Google also says 38% of school-related requests include an attachment.

Creative generation has reached substantial volume as well: Google reports that Gemini generates more than 150 million images per day. The company also says the app has more than 100 million active users on iOS.

Why the milestone matters

The numbers suggest that mainstream AI-assistant use is moving beyond text chat toward voice, visual context, files and action-taking across connected apps. For developers and businesses, that shift increases the importance of multimodal UX, latency, tool reliability, privacy controls and cross-device continuity rather than model quality alone.

The figures are company-reported product metrics, not independently audited market-share numbers, so they should be read as Google's own measurement of Gemini usage rather than a universal benchmark of the AI-assistant market.
