Microsoft AI Max Opens AI-Powered Search Campaigns to All Advertisers

Microsoft Advertising has made AI Max available to all advertisers, combining AI query matching, generated ad text and intent-based landing-page routing with campaign controls.

AI Max is now available to all Microsoft Advertising customers

Microsoft Advertising announced on August 27, 2026 that AI Max for Search campaigns is now available to all advertisers. This is a released advertising product capability, not a preview or a future roadmap item.

AI Max is an optional suite layered onto standard Search campaigns. It combines three AI-assisted capabilities: expanded search-term matching, text customization and final URL expansion. The goal is to interpret richer or more conversational search intent while continuing to operate inside an advertiser's existing campaign boundaries.

Three AI capabilities work together

Search term matching uses keywords, ads, landing pages and other contextual signals to identify relevant searches beyond a manually maintained keyword list. Microsoft says this includes traditional searches as well as AI-driven exploration paths where one consumer prompt can generate multiple underlying searches.

Text customization uses Microsoft AI with advertiser-provided assets and website content to generate and test additional messaging variations, selecting combinations at auction time.

Final URL expansion can route a user to the page on an advertiser's site that best matches the inferred intent instead of always sending traffic to one fixed landing page.

These capabilities can be enabled together or separately. They do not remove the need for campaign design, conversion tracking, landing-page quality or human review of brand and regulatory requirements.

Microsoft pairs automation with reporting and controls

AI Max exposes an “AI optimized” label in search-term and keyword reports, shows AI-generated assets in asset reporting, and adds a report for the landing pages selected by final URL expansion. Existing negative keywords, bidding strategies, budgets, conversion goals and targeting settings continue to apply.

Advertisers can also use brand inclusion and exclusion lists plus term exclusions that prevent specified words or phrases from appearing in AI-generated creative. Microsoft says prompt-based messaging guidelines are coming soon, so those should not be treated as generally available today.

Microsoft cites internal advertising measurements including higher engagement in Copilot ad experiences and says most advertisers in its AI Max testing saw a conversion lift above 10%. Those figures are Microsoft-reported performance observations, not guarantees that every campaign will improve. One named customer, Crunchyroll, reported nearly a 5% conversion lift at a similar CPA in its use case.

For marketers, the practical significance is that Microsoft's search-ad stack is moving from fixed keyword and landing-page choices toward AI-assisted intent interpretation while preserving explicit reporting and campaign controls. Teams should validate incremental conversions, query quality, generated copy, destination routing and brand safety against their own workloads before scaling spend.
