OpenAI Launches Thailand AI Accelerator With MHESI

OpenAI and Thailand launch an eight-week AI accelerator

OpenAI and Thailand's Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) announced the OpenAI x MHESI AI Accelerator in Bangkok on August 28, 2026.

The first cohort includes 10 Thai startups, split between medical/wellness AI and education. OpenAI describes this as its first public-private partnership with the Thai government focused on helping local startups turn AI prototypes into deployable products.

This is a program launch, not a new OpenAI model release. The accelerator is running over eight weeks, while the participating companies' planned pilots and November Demo Day are upcoming milestones rather than completed deployments.

What participating startups receive

OpenAI says each startup will receive US$2,000 in API credits, one-on-one technical guidance, access to its latest frontier models and a dedicated mentor.

Weekly work is expected to cover product design, engineering, automated testing, evaluation, responsible AI, privacy and security, cost management, growth and fundraising. MHESI will connect teams with research and talent networks, Thailand's National Innovation Agency will support funding and growth connections, and Mahidol University will contribute academic mentors.

Each company is expected to set a concrete product, pilot, evaluation or commercial milestone for the program.

Health and education are the initial focus

The cohort includes CARIVA, Wello Food, Dietz, Precisionize, FitSloth, Curico, insKru, Floaino, EasyKids Robotics and Globish.

OpenAI highlights CARIVA's multilingual hospital-phone voice agent as one example. The team plans to work on evaluation and steering for real-time speech, including recognition and escalation of possible medical emergencies. OpenAI says a pilot-hospital live-call deployment is a goal for Demo Day; that deployment should therefore be treated as planned, not already completed.

Curico is developing AI-assisted learning tools for children, families and educators. Its planned accelerator milestones include childcare-center pilots, teacher training and AI-assisted grading tests.

Thailand usage figures are company-reported

OpenAI says its internal data places Thailand among the top 20 countries for weekly ChatGPT active users. It also reports that weekly active Codex usage in Thailand has grown more than 350-fold since the start of 2026.

Those figures come from OpenAI's own internal usage data and should be understood as company-reported metrics rather than independently audited national statistics.

What happens next

The accelerator is scheduled to conclude with a Demo Day in Bangkok in November 2026. Teams are expected to present working products or substantial upgrades, evidence from representative users, early evaluation findings and a credible implementation path.

The broader significance is ecosystem-focused: OpenAI and Thai public institutions are testing a repeatable model for moving local AI projects from prototype to validated deployment in health and education. The useful signal will be what the startups can demonstrate in real environments after the accelerator, not simply participation in the program.
