Overview

EPFL's EESD laboratory is recruiting two full-time PhD candidates to study the seismic behaviour of historic masonry building aggregates through experiments, field investigation and numerical simulation.

Complete research opportunity details

The two doctoral researchers will join the ZAGGREGATE project at EPFL's School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering. Work focuses on seismic behaviour of historic brick masonry building aggregates and on assessment and retrofit approaches for earthquake-prone historic urban environments. Responsibilities include original experimental, numerical and analytical research, collaboration with the University of Zagreb and other partners, scientific publication and conference dissemination, dissertation research, and participation in education/student supervision. EPFL offers a one-year fixed-term contract renewable for three additional years, for a total four-year PhD duration, at 100% activity rate, with a competitive salary under EPFL conditions; the official posting does not state a numeric salary.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants need an MSc or equivalent in Civil Engineering with a focus on Structural Engineering, interest or experience in experimental and/or numerical structural-engineering methods, excellent written and spoken English, and familiarity with Python, MATLAB or similar data-analysis tools. Familiarity with OpenSees, Abaqus, DIANA or similar numerical-modeling software is an asset. Shortlisted applicants must separately qualify for EPFL's EDCE doctoral programme.

Tips for this phd opportunity

Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.

  1. Match your research background to the project, laboratory, supervisor and required methods rather than applying only from the title.
  2. Prepare a focused academic CV, transcripts, publications and research statement or proposal when requested by the official call.
  3. Confirm funding duration, stipend/salary, tuition coverage, start date and eligibility for international applicants.
  4. Contact a supervisor before applying only when the official instructions recommend or require it.

Verification notes

Verified against the official EPFL careers posting, reference 2305. EPFL describes the salary as competitive but does not publish a numeric amount, so no salary figure is inserted.
