About the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship The AU EGLS is intended for international students who will require a non-immigrant student visa, preferably an F-1 or J-1 visa, to study in the United States. Financial Benefits The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is fully funded for billable American University expenses. It covers:

However, the scholarship does not cover certain non-billable expenses, including mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes, and miscellaneous costs. American University estimates these additional expenses at approximately US$4,000 per year. American University also offers AU EGL Partial Scholarships worth up to US$40,000 per year to additional talented applicants who successfully complete the AU EGLS process. Eligibility Criteria Applicants for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship 2027 must meet several requirements. They must be international students who are eligible to obtain a U.S. student visa and must not be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, pending permanent residents, or dual citizens of the United States. Applicants must also be first-year undergraduate students. Those who have already started or completed post-secondary studies at another university are not eligible. Students who graduated from secondary school before 2024 are also ineligible. Preference is given to students who are still enrolled in secondary school and will graduate by June 2027, have demonstrated leadership and community service experience, and meet American University’s English proficiency requirements. Application Process and Deadline Applicants must complete the Common Application and submit all required supporting documents before the AU EGLS deadline. They must then create their American University applicant portal and submit the AU EGLS application and required essays through the portal. For the 2027 intake, the AU EGLS application deadline is January 15, 2027. Late applications will not be considered. Finalists and scholarship winners are expected to be notified by April 1, 2027.
