CERN's 2027-1 Doctoral Student Programme has an ideal start date of 1 April 2027. Selected doctoral students conduct thesis research jointly with CERN and their home university. CERN lists a CHF 3,907 monthly net allowance, 30 days paid leave per year plus two weeks annual closure, health-insurance coverage under programme rules and possible family/travel support.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must be nationals of an eligible CERN Member or Associate Member State, have good knowledge of English or French, have started or be about to start a doctoral programme, and have university support confirming that CERN research contributes to the PhD thesis. The study field must align with CERN research areas. CERN currently states that applications from Pakistani, Lithuanian, Latvian, Cypriot and Croatian nationals cannot be considered because the applicable Associate Membership ceiling has been reached.
