Position Summary

The Civil Engineering Intern supports active utility construction projects through a structured rotational program that provides exposure to both field operations and office-based project coordination. Interns assist Field Engineers and Project Management teams with technical documentation, field verification, and administrative project support while developing a foundational understanding of design-build utility construction. This role is designed for learning, hands-on experience, and professional development under close supervision.

Requirements

Essential Duties & Responsibilities – Field Rotation (Approx. 6 Weeks)

  • Assist with field surveys and layout activities using GPS, total station, and data collection tools under supervision.
  • Observe and support utility installation verification including trenching, conduit/pipe installation, backfill, and restoration activities.
  • Assist in updating as-built drawings by collecting field data and redlines for review by Field Engineers.
  • Participate in quality and safety inspections, documenting observations and reporting findings to supervisors.
  • Track daily construction activities and assist with basic production reporting.
  • Coordinate with field crews to gather accurate information and maintain up-to-date field documentation.
  • Support end-of-day documentation and reporting processes as directed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities – Office Rotation (Approx. 6 Weeks)

  • Assist with project documentation including RFIs, submittals, daily reports, and change logs.
  • Support schedule updates and progress tracking by gathering information from field teams.
  • Assist with billing and cost tracking preparation including organizing backup documentation.
  • Participate in design coordination efforts updating redlines and as-built drawings in AutoCAD or Civil 3D under supervision.
  • Observe and assist with procurement activities including vendor communication and material tracking.
  • Maintain organized project files and documentation in accordance with company standards.

Qualifications – Required

  • Currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering or related degree program.
  • Basic understanding of construction drawings and technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D preferred but not required.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
  • Willingness to work in both field and office environments.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites.

Qualifications – Preferred

  • Exposure to utility construction, surveying, or construction management coursework.
  • Interest in learning construction and project management tools (e.g., Procore).
  • Strong work ethic, curiosity, and willingness to learn.Ability to follow instructions, ask questions, and accept feedback.
