Overview

EMBO supports internationally mobile life-science postdoctoral researchers for up to two years; the next hard evaluation cutoff is 22 January 2027.

Complete research opportunity details

Applications are accepted throughout the year and enter one of two evaluation cycles. The next spring evaluation cutoff is 22 January 2027 at 14:00 CET. Fellowships support internationally mobile postdoctoral research in Europe and worldwide for up to two years. Depending on destination, support is delivered as an employment-contract salary or a stipend; the programme also includes relocation support, support for fellows with children, access to an EMBO Laboratory Leadership course and the EMBO Fellows network.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must hold a doctorate or equivalent by the fellowship start. Applicants who already hold a PhD when applying generally must have obtained it within the previous two years. At least one first-author peer-reviewed research paper, or a qualifying first-author preprint with independent in-depth peer review, is required. International mobility is mandatory: the fellowship cannot normally be held in the country where the PhD was obtained, in the PhD laboratory/department, with the PhD supervisor, or in a laboratory where the applicant previously worked for more than six months. A direct continuation of the PhD project is not eligible.

Tips for this postdoctoral opportunity

Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.

  1. Match your research background to the project, laboratory, supervisor and required methods rather than applying only from the title.
  2. Prepare a focused academic CV, transcripts, publications and research statement or proposal when requested by the official call.
  3. Confirm funding duration, stipend/salary, tuition coverage, start date and eligibility for international applicants.
  4. Contact a supervisor before applying only when the official instructions recommend or require it.
