Overview
EMBO accepts Scientific Exchange Grant applications year-round for eligible life-science researchers planning new international laboratory collaborations lasting from seven days to three months.
Complete grant details
EMBO Scientific Exchange Grants support international research visits that transfer expertise, techniques or access to infrastructure between eligible laboratories. The grant contributes to the fellow's travel and destination-dependent subsistence costs for visits of seven to 90 days; dependents, bench fees, conference travel, overheads and visa costs are not covered. Applications are accepted throughout the year and must be submitted at least 30 days before the proposed visit, with EMBO recommending at least three months' lead time.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants may be active researchers at any career stage but must have at least one year of graduate-level research experience or equivalent. The standard route supports exchanges between laboratories in EMBC Member States and EMBC/EMBO global partners Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan; eligible researchers in specified JST programmes may also apply for exchanges to EMBC Member States. Exchanges within the same country, existing or previous collaborations, former supervisors or laboratories already visited are generally not eligible. The applicant must return to the home laboratory for at least six consecutive months after the visit.
Tips for this grant
Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.
- Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
- Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
- Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
- Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.
Verification notes
Verified against the official EMBO programme, eligibility, benefits and application pages on 27 August 2026. EMBO confirms year-round applications, the 30-day minimum lead time, seven-to-90-day funded duration and travel plus subsistence support.
