Engineering Manager- Ceph & Distributed Storage

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Engineering Manager – Ceph & Distributed Storage based in Italy. This is a remote engineering leadership role focused on building and evolving software-defined storage solutions powered by Ceph and open-source technologies. You will lead a globally distributed team of software engineers working on reliable, scalable storage infrastructure. The role combines hands-on technical leadership with people management, coaching, and strategic planning. You will help shape software architecture, engineering practices, quality standards, and product delivery. Your work will contribute to making distributed storage easier to deploy, operate, and scale across enterprise and edge environments. You will collaborate with engineering leaders, technical stakeholders, and globally distributed teams in an agile environment. The position is primarily home-based, with international travel of up to 20% for internal and external events.

Lead a team developing a Ceph-focused software-defined storage solution for enterprise and edge environments. Build, manage, and develop a globally distributed engineering team through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and career development. Provide strong technical leadership while contributing directly to engineering objectives and demonstrating sound software engineering practices. Guide software architecture and promote high standards for software quality, testing, documentation, reliability, and maintainability. Establish realistic delivery schedules based on thoughtful estimates and continuously improve planning through feedback loops. Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, technical stakeholders, and external partners. Promote modern agile development practices and foster a collaborative culture centered on engineering excellence. Participate in broader engineering leadership, contributing to strategic planning, execution, and cross-functional collaboration. Support a remote-first working environment while participating in periodic international travel for team and company events. Requirements Professional software engineering background, with experience in Python and/or C++; strong Python experience is particularly relevant. Hands-on experience operating scale-out storage clusters on Linux in production environments, ideally with Ceph. Knowledge of Linux storage subsystems, filesystems, distributed storage, and network storage technologies. Proven experience leading, managing, coaching, and mentoring software engineers toward timely delivery of high-quality software. Strong understanding of software development principles, architecture, testing, documentation, and engineering best practices. Experience working effectively in agile software development environments. Demonstrated ability to balance technical contribution with people leadership and team development. Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to work effectively across globally distributed teams. Curiosity about emerging technologies and an interest in solving complex infrastructure and distributed-systems challenges. Willingness and ability to work remotely and travel internationally, including approximately 2–4 in-person team or company events per year. Benefits Fully remote, home-based working environment.
