Overview

Research Ireland and EPSRC accept rolling joint proposals from collaborative UK–Republic of Ireland research teams across the EPSRC remit.

Complete grant details

The partnership supports joint research and technology development in chemistry, engineering, ICT, materials, mathematical sciences and physics. A single joint proposal is submitted to EPSRC under its responsive-mode working-with-overseas-scientists route. Research Ireland funds the Republic of Ireland component, with up to €500,000 in direct costs for the Irish partners over 12 to 60 months plus an additional eligible overhead contribution. The former Expression of Interest stage is no longer required.

Eligibility requirements

The UK applicants must meet normal EPSRC eligibility. Republic of Ireland partners must be based at an institution eligible for Research Ireland support. Irish co-leads must hold a PhD or equivalent and be eligible academic staff or contract researchers recognized as independent investigators, with the authority and capacity to supervise team members.

Tips for this grant

Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.

  1. Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
  2. Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
  3. Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
  4. Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.

Verification notes

Verified on the current Research Ireland 2026 page, which marks the call Open and Rolling and states that joint applications are accepted at any time. The €500,000 figure is the maximum direct-cost request for the Republic of Ireland component, not the total UK project budget.
