The Esl Program

The University of Belize is proud to host the Regional Language Center (RLC) in Belmopan, offering specialized second-language courses in English and other languages. The RLC serves as a bridge between the Caribbean and Central America, providing programs tailored to the needs of both national and international students.

The ten-month English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is designed to improve participants' English skills, regardless of their starting proficiency. Upon arrival, all students take a placement test to ensure they join a group that matches their language level. Scholarship students study alongside private students from various countries, including Cuba, Panama, Colombia, Mexico, China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Russia, and other Central and South American nations.

The program focuses on developing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills through immersive, practical learning. Faculty emphasize real-world applications, and eligible students complete a mandatory 60-hour language internship. During the first week, students receive a detailed orientation about the curriculum and expectations, and each student is assigned an academic advisor to guide them.

Upon successfully completing the program, students earn a certificate of completion from the University of Belize. While the scholarship covers tuition, fees, books, and part of housing costs, students are responsible for some additional expenses. These include having an English dictionary (hard copy or digital), a translator/translation dictionary, recording devices, headphones, and a laptop.

• Applicants must be 18 years old upon application.

• Must commit to 10 months of living in Belize from January to October

• Applicants must have a minimum of a High-School Certificate.

• Commit to studying full-time in Belize without the possibility of employment or part time studies.

• Must abide by the rules and regulations of The University and country of Belize.

• Complete a UB-RLC application form with an application fee of US $15.00 (this fee may be waived for some applicants depending on their country of origin).

• Basic to Intermediate competence in English as a Second Language.

• Ability to commit to the program.

• Completed UB-RLC application form (original and copy)

• Updated Curriculum Vitae with professional photo

• Original Transcript

• Copy of passport

• Copy of notarized Diploma (If not in English language, MUST be translated)

• Copy of notarized birth certificate (If not in English language, MUST be translated)
