The Garching fellowship lasts three years. Fellows develop independent research programmes and spend 25% of their time on functional work selected from ESO departmental projects. ESO provides science funding for conferences, workshops and research visits, and offers competitive salary and allowances, comprehensive social benefits and financial support for relocating families.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must have obtained a PhD in astronomy, physics or a related discipline before 1 November 2027. Early-career scientists across observational, theoretical and computational astrophysics are eligible. ESO states that no nationality is excluded in principle, while recruitment preference applies to nationals of its Member States, host states and strategic partners.
