The following prizes and awards are established to recognise students for their outstanding academic achievement in various units or programs of study.

Many faculties, schools and disciplines award prizes to their students based on academic merit. These prizes often do not require applications.

Charles Perkins Centre Len Storlien Award

$1,500 award

This prize has been established to support Charles Perkins Centre (CPC) PhD candidates who have presented at the CPC Biology Domain or Boden Initiative Seminar Series to attend an international conference.

This prize has been established in honour of Dr. Len Storlien, an outstanding researcher, collaborator and mentor in nutrition and metabolic function.

Eligibility

At the time of application, you must be either currently enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney, or have completed a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney in the previous calendar year.

You must also:

• be supervised by a Charles Perkins Centre member.

• have presented at a Charles Perkins Centre Biology Domain or Boden Initiative seminar.

• present at a Charles Perkins Centre symposium if shortlisted.

Aola Richards Writing Up Support Award

$13,000 award

The Aola Richards Writing-Up Support (ARWUS) Award is awarded to HDR students in the discipline of entomology to encourage and assist those who are finalising papers or writing fellowship applications following the completion of their higher-degree by research at the University of Sydney.

This Award is funded by a generous bequest from Professor Aola Mary Richards to the University of Sydney.

Who's eligible

• To be considered eligible for this Award, applicants must have been enrolled in either PhD or Master’s by Research at the University of Sydney.

• The applicant must have submitted their thesis focused on entomology

• The applicant must have submitted their thesis no more than four months prior to the application closing date

• Previous recipients of this Award are not eligible

• Applicants must be willing to complete a skill transfer workshop after receiving the Award.

• Applications will open on 30 June, 30 September & 31 December 2026.

Anne Dunn Memorial Prize For Outstanding Performance In Media Production

$200 or $500 award

Established in 2013 to commemorate the work of Associate Professor Anne Dunn, an outstanding colleague, and foundational staff member of Media and Communications at the University of Sydney. Associate Professor Anne Dunn was a respected and widely loved Australian journalism educator, media scholar and broadcast media professional who had a particular passion for creative partnerships between industry and academy.

Who's Eligible

Students must have completed Media Production units of study in one of the following degrees:

• Undergraduate study in the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Media and Communications)

• Postgraduate study including Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Media Practice, Digital Communication and Culture, Publishing, Health Communication and Strategic Public Relations

There is no separate application for this prize.

What we offer

The value of each prize under 3a and 3b in the terms and conditions is $200 and will be paid as a one-off payment. The value of prizes 3c and 3d in the terms and conditions is $500 and will be paid as a one-off payment.

Armstrong Prize In The Philosophy Of Mind

$1,000 award

This annual prize was established from a gift from Mr Dennis Balson to reward the best undergraduate essay on the philosophy of mind and/or consciousness.

Who's Eligible

• You must be enrolled in a coursework program in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and

• have completed and submitted your essay on the philosophy of mind and/or consciousness.

How to apply

There is no separate application for this prize. The winner will be nominated by the Department of Philosophy during the annual Board of Examiners meeting.

Australasian Pioneers' Club Prize

$1,200 award

Established in 1991 by a donation from the members of the Australasian Pioneers' Club.

Who's Eligible

You must have submitted an Honours thesis in the area of Australian History at the University of Sydney.

What we offer

This prize has a value of $1,200 and will be paid as a one-off payment.

Ben Sandford Cullen Award (Archaeology And Anthropology)

$2,000 award

The Ben Sandford Cullen Award (Archaeology and Anthropology) is to provide funds to enable post-graduate students whose research in Archaeology or Anthropology is theoretically innovative to be assisted with research, travel or publication expenses.

The award was founded in 1996 by the colleagues, friends and family of Dr Ben Cullen, who suddenly and unexpectedly died aged 31, in 1995. This award is to commemorate Dr Ben Cullen’s work in Archaeology.

Who's Eligible

You must be enrolled in a master's by research (including MPhil) or PhD in the following:

• studying Archaeology in odd-numbered years (like 2021) or Anthropology in even-numbered years (like 2022).

You must also have completed in the three previous calendar years at least one of the following:

• a research article(s) in a refereed journal(s)

• a refereed conference paper(s), or

• book(s).

• Closes 23 July 2026

David Ritchie Prize For 1000 Level Latin

This prize is funded by a bequest by David Ritchie to support the study and promotion of Greek and Latin languages and literature.

Who's Eligible

• be enrolled in a major in Latin in a bachelor’s degree within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney.

• completed 12 credit points of 1000-level Latin units of study.

What we offer

This award has a value of $500 and will be paid as a one-off payment.
