Forensic Highway/Bridge Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Forensic Highway/Bridge Engineer based in the United States. This role combines advanced highway and bridge engineering expertise with forensic investigation and litigation consulting. You will evaluate complex infrastructure disputes involving design, construction, inspection, deterioration, safety, and rehabilitation. Your technical judgment will help establish causation, assess standards of care, and develop independent expert opinions for high-stakes disputes. The position includes site investigations, technical analysis, expert report preparation, and testimony in depositions, arbitration, and court proceedings. You will work closely with attorneys, insurers, infrastructure owners, contractors, and other technical experts. The role offers an opportunity to leverage substantial engineering experience in a client-facing environment focused on complex infrastructure and dispute resolution. This is a fully remote, full-time position supporting matters involving transportation infrastructure across the United States.

Lead forensic investigations involving highway and bridge infrastructure, including superstructures, substructures, bearings, joints, decks, approach slabs, retaining walls, roadway geometry, drainage interfaces, and related civil works. Conduct site inspections and collect evidence following structural failures, significant load events, deterioration concerns, construction deficiencies, inspection disputes, or incident-related claims. Determine the cause, origin, extent, and contributing factors associated with infrastructure failures or performance issues. Evaluate design intent, construction practices, inspection and maintenance history, load-rating practices, and lifecycle performance. Prepare independent, technically rigorous, litigation-ready expert reports and supporting exhibits for arbitration, mediation, and court proceedings. Provide expert witness testimony during depositions, arbitration proceedings, and court proceedings, including testimony under cross-examination. Collaborate with attorneys, insurers, owners, contractors, and other technical experts to develop coordinated opinions and address opposing expert positions. Advise clients on repair, rehabilitation, remediation, risk mitigation, constructability, safety, and dispute-resolution considerations. Review engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, inspection reports, load ratings, as-built documentation, maintenance records, and construction records. Evaluate deterioration mechanisms and performance drivers, including corrosion, fatigue, cracking, scour and hydraulic impacts, joint and bearing performance, and concrete distress. Assess infrastructure against applicable engineering codes, standards, and inspection guidance, including AASHTO, FHWA/NBIS requirements where applicable, and state DOT criteria. Perform or direct technical analyses such as load-rating reviews, condition assessments, deterioration evaluations, fracture or fatigue assessments, and construction-quality reviews. Develop technically sound repair, rehabilitation, and mitigation recommendations, including prioritization of corrective actions and long-term performance considerations. Support client engagement, proposal preparation, business development activities, and relationship-building initiatives. Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline; an advanced degree is preferred. Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one U.S. state is required; multi-state licensure is preferred. At least 10 years of highway and/or bridge engineering experience , including substantial experience in design, inspection, rehabilitation, or related technical disciplines. At least 1 year of experience serving as an expert witness , including formal testimony in depositions and/or court proceedings. Demonstrated experience in forensic engineering and litigation consulting. Strong knowledge of bridge inspection standards, load rating, deterioration assessment, and transportation infrastructure performance. Ability to investigate complex technical issues and connect engineering findings to applicable standards of care. Strong understanding of highway and bridge design, construction, inspection, maintenance, and rehabilitation practices. Excellent technical writing skills and the ability to prepare clear, defensible expert reports. Strong verbal communication and presentation skills, including confidence providing technical testimony. Strong client-service and relationship-management capabilities. Ability to collaborate effectively with legal, insurance, engineering, construction, and infrastructure stakeholders. Experience supporting business development, proposal preparation, and client engagement activities. Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently while managing multiple complex matters, deadlines, and client priorities. Benefits Fully remote work within the United States.
