The successful candidate will help translate research, data, and complex ideas into compelling, accessible, and engaging visual communications for a broad range of audiences.
The role combines creative design leadership with hands-on production management.
The Senior Designer will oversee projects from concept through final production, while managing the organisation’s day-to-day design workflow in Asana.
Key Responsibilities
Design and Visual Communication
The Senior Designer will:

Lead the design and production of research reports, publications, presentations, infographics, data visualizations, website graphics, illustrations, toolkits, guides, campaigns, and other communications materials.

Translate complex research, data, and social science concepts into clear and compelling visual communications.
-
Develop creative concepts that support communications objectives and maintain a cohesive visual identity.

Collaborate with writers, editors, researchers, communications colleagues, program staff, and leadership.
-
Develop and maintain design templates and systems for efficient and consistent production.
-
Provide art direction and creative guidance to external designers, illustrators, photographers, videographers, and other creative partners.
-
Ensure final products meet standards for visual quality, accessibility, accuracy, and brand consistency.

Stay current with developments in visual storytelling, information design, and emerging creative technologies.
Production Management
The Senior Designer will also:

Manage the end-to-end design and communications production pipeline in Asana.
-
Establish project scopes, schedules, review stages, deadlines, and deliverables.
-
Manage multiple projects simultaneously and identify potential bottlenecks and timeline risks.
-
Coordinate design processes across research, programs, communications, development, and leadership teams.
-
Manage feedback, revisions, proofreading, and final quality assurance.
-
Coordinate with external copy editors and other vendors where required.
-
Engage and manage freelance designers and design vendors when additional capacity is needed.
-
Prepare final files for digital publication, print, web, social, and other channels.
-
Maintain organised design files, templates, assets, and production documentation.

Continuously improve creative production systems and workflows.
Creative Strategy and Innovation
The successful candidate will contribute to the evolution of FrameWorks Institute’s visual identity and creative strategy.
Responsibilities include:

Helping establish and maintain visual standards and guidelines.

Supporting major campaigns and high-priority organisational initiatives.
-
Developing innovative approaches to presenting research and reaching audiences.
-
Using AI tools appropriately to improve efficiency while maintaining accuracy, accessibility, originality, and quality.

Exploring emerging design technologies and tools.
-
Supporting responsible AI-assisted design practices through appropriate human review and quality control.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates should have:
-
5–10 years of education and/or professional experience in graphic design, interactive design, multimedia, communications, or a related field.
-
Experience in nonprofit, mission-driven, or agency environments is preferred.
-
A strong portfolio demonstrating visual design, information design, typography, layout, and visual storytelling.
-
Experience translating complex research, data, or ideas into accessible visual communications.
-
Experience designing across reports, publications, presentations, digital content, social media, websites, and campaigns.
-
Experience with data visualization and information design.
-
Strong knowledge of professional design tools such as Adobe Creative Cloud, InDesign, Figma, Canva, or comparable platforms.

Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.

Knowledge of editorial review, proofreading, file preparation, digital publishing, and quality assurance processes.

Exceptional attention to detail and strong strategic thinking.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

The ability to work independently, take initiative, solve problems, and incorporate feedback.

An interest in social issues, public-interest communications, social science, advocacy, or narrative change.

A commitment to accessibility, inclusive design, and respectful communication.

Technical Skills
Applicants should be proficient or experienced with:

Adobe Creative Cloud, including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, and/or comparable professional design software.

Asana or similar project management platforms.
-
Slack and Zoom.

Web content management systems.

Emerging design technologies and AI tools used within organisational policies.
Work Environment
This is a fully remote position. The successful candidate is expected to maintain a dedicated home workspace with reliable internet connectivity and be available for regular virtual collaboration.
Standard core working hours are generally 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET. The position may occasionally require travel for organisational meetings, conferences, or events.
Salary and Benefits
The Senior Designer position offers a salary of $90,000–$100,000 per year, depending on experience.
