Overview

Getty is accepting 2027–2028 Villa Scholar Grant applications from established researchers and professionals worldwide for three-month residential research on the theme “The Classical World in Context: Glocalization.”

Complete grant details

Getty Villa Scholars are in residence for three months in September–December, January–March, or April–June and receive a USD 21,500 stipend. Getty also states that the grant includes an office at the Villa, research assistance, a travel stipend for relocation to Los Angeles, an apartment in Getty scholar housing, and an available healthcare option. Getty notes that these terms are current as of July 2024 and subject to future change.

Eligibility requirements

Applications are welcome from researchers of all nationalities working in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Getty describes Scholar Grants as intended for established researchers and professionals who have generally held PhDs for at least five years and/or have strong publication and professional records. Applicants who received their degree after 1 September 2022 are directed to the postdoctoral route, which will not be offered at the Getty Villa in 2027–2028. Current Getty staff and immediate family are ineligible, and prior Getty Residential Grant recipients must observe the six-year waiting period.

Tips for this grant

Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.

  1. Align the project closely with the 2027–2028 theme, 'The Classical World in Context: Glocalization'.
  2. Prepare the five-page project proposal and CV before entering the Getty Foundation Grant Portal.
  3. Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
  4. Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
  5. Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
  6. Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.

Verification notes

Verified on Getty’s active 2027–2028 Villa Scholars applicant page and the Getty Foundation Grant Portal. The applicant page states a 1 October 2026 deadline but no closing time, so deadline_date is used. The USD 21,500 three-month stipend, housing, travel stipend, research assistance and healthcare option are stated by Getty; the source cautions that terms are subject to change.
