Overview
Google is accepting 2026 R&D award proposals for carbon dioxide removal and superpollutant abatement research, with priority areas spanning science, engineering, field research, modeling and climate-impact measurement.

Eligible projects can include theoretical, laboratory or field research, engineering and prototyping, data/modeling work, and qualifying review or meta-analysis. Funding varies by research area. Several priority areas and the open call offer up to US$450,000 for a single project; some methane-related areas offer up to US$500,000, and one perennial-crop area offers up to two projects for a combined total of US$800,000. Successful funds are expected to be disbursed by December 31, 2026.
Eligibility requirements
Applications are open to individuals at universities, research institutions, nonprofit organizations, social enterprises or businesses focused on R&D or innovation. Applicants from businesses, nonprofits or social enterprises should have R&D experience comparable to a university/research-institution researcher and are expected to demonstrate community engagement and open science. The applicant is expected to serve as principal investigator; a co-PI is allowed if the co-PI meets the same eligibility criteria.
