Full job description

Your Mission

In this role, you'll take ownership of the hardware in our existing devices. You'll maintain it, resolve issues, and improve its reliability, and you'll also design new electronics and take them into production. You'll work closely with our product owner, firmware and software engineers, and manufacturing partners to turn product requirements into production-ready hardware.

Your responsibilites:

  • Collaborate with the Embedded Systems team to develop end-to-end features and debug issues across the hardware and firmware boundary.
  • Work closely with our product owner to assess the technical feasibility of product requirements, define the necessary hardware and component changes, and communicate constraints and trade-offs.
  • Design the electronics inside the alea product, from schematic and PCB layout through bring-up and production release, and maintain the electronics in our existing gateways and sensor devices.
  • Evaluate and select components with a focus on power efficiency, connectivity, and durability, including replacing parts in existing designs and qualifying the replacements.
  • Conduct testing, validation, and debugging of hardware prototypes and production units.
  • Support compliance and regulatory testing, including radio approval for our wireless components.
  • Document schematics, BOMs, and hardware test procedures in line with our medical device quality requirements.
  • Develop programming and flashing fixtures, functional test systems, end-of-line tests, and mechanical assembly jigs for our gateways and sensor devices.
  • Work with external manufacturing and assembly partners for prototyping and production, and support them with production failures, rework instructions, and yield problems.
  • Optimize BOM costs, manage component obsolescence, and qualify replacement parts as needed.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in product reliability and performance

Qualifications And Requirements

  • Minimum five years of experience designing electronic hardware, including hands-on work on products already in the field.
  • Strong experience using Altium Designer
  • Good understanding of analog/digital circuit design, low-power systems, and wireless communication (e.g., BLE, LoRa, LTE-M, NB-IoT)
  • Experience with microcontrollers (STM32, ESP32, Nordic, or similar)
  • Ability to use laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers, and to isolate faults on assembled PCBs down to component level, including soldering and rework.
  • Familiarity with thermal management and reliability or failure analysis, and experience taking corrective hardware changes through verification and into production.
  • Understanding of PCB design best practices, signal integrity, EMC, ESD, and CE certification processes
  • Basic scripting skills, preferably Python, for test automation and production fixtures.
  • Excellent communication skills in English; German is a plus

Nice to have:

  • RF PCB layout experience
  • Embedded C firmware development experience
  • Knowledge of Python, Zephyr, and Yocto
  • Mechanical construction knowledge: CAD design, 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC

Why Us?

  • A permanent position in a company with a product that matters to society
  • Real scope to shape things: you actively help build our support structure and self-service formats instead of just working through ready-made processes
  • A modern office in a central Kurfürstendamm location, where dogs are welcome too
  • Collegial teamwork in an international team, plus regular team events
  • A tax-free benefit allowance of €600 per year via the benefits platform Probonio
