Harkness Fellows spend up to a year in the United States conducting internationally comparative health policy or health-care-delivery research with U.S. mentors and participating in leadership development and policy seminars. The award provides dedicated research funding, an approximately US$8,500 monthly living stipend, round-trip airfare, relocation support, health insurance coverage, and payment of U.S. federal and state withholding taxes. A family supplement is available for fellows accompanied by a partner and/or children under 18; exact terms vary by country.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must be established residents of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore or the United Kingdom; be eligible for a J-1 Research Scholar Visa; commit to continuing their career in the country from which they apply; demonstrate health-policy leadership and expertise; and propose a project relevant to both the U.S. and their home country focused on policy or system-level change.
