Full Job Description

Defined by an ethos of community, the Hodson Trust Scholarship and the Hodson-Gilliam Success Scholarship are awarded to incoming first-year students who have demonstrated academic and personal achievement and made an impact in their communities.

Recipients of the Hodson Trust and Hodson-Gilliam Success scholarships are welcomed into the Hodson Scholars Program, a vibrant community of students committed to leadership, service, and meaningful engagement.

These scholarships cover a significant portion of the annual tuition cost and provide students with the financial flexibility to continue inspiring others—in the Hopkins and Baltimore communities and the world around them.

Hodson Scholars are part of a cohort of students who have achieved excellence not only in their academics, but also in their extracurricular pursuits, and are actively engaged and eager to take the initiative to make meaningful change in the world.

As part of the Hodson Scholars Program, students have the chance to engage in meaningful conversations, learn from different perspectives, and collaborate with their peers as they develop their passions.

The program offers:

• A cohort of peers

• Community-building activities including social gatherings and workshops

• Mentorship from other Hodson Scholars

• Leadership opportunities through the Hodson Scholars Leadership Team

• Engagement with the Baltimore community through service projects

Eligibility

We identify incoming Hodson Scholars by the initiative they’ve already shown in defining their educational experience—through a collaborative spirit, ability to apply their learning to the real world, and leadership in serving others.

Selected students are awarded either the Hodson Trust Scholarship or the Hodson‑Gilliam Success Scholarship, and all recipients participate in the Hodson Scholars Program.

There is no separate application process or additional materials required to be considered. All students who apply for undergraduate admission are automatically considered.

Hodson Trust Scholarship

The Hodson Trust Scholarship is awarded to incoming first-year students in recognition of academic and personal achievement, leadership, and engagement beyond the classroom. The scholarship is renewable for four years of undergraduate study provided students maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher.

Hodson Gilliam Success Scholarship

The Hodson‑Gilliam Success Scholarship recognizes incoming first‑year students who demonstrate academic and personal achievement and have financial need. This scholarship is renewable for four years of undergraduate study provided students make Satisfactory Academic Progress and remain eligible for need-based financial aid. A portion of this scholarship replaces the typical first-year work-study expectation in financial aid offers.

About The Hodson Trust

The Hodson Trust was established in 1920 by Col. Clarence Hodson, a Maryland native and a successful banker whose Beneficial Loan Society grew to more than 200 offices across the United States in the early 20th century. Upon his death, his heirs continued to advance his lifelong philanthropic interest—supporting higher education—through the Hodson Trust. Hopkins, which has received nearly $90 million for a variety of priorities, is one of four Maryland higher education institutions the Trust supports.

Is There A Separate Application Process For These Scholarships?

No. There is no separate application process or additional materials required to be considered for the Hodson Trust or Hodson-Gilliam Success scholarships. All students who apply for undergraduate admission are automatically considered for several merit scholarships.

How And When Will I Be Notified If I Am Chosen As A Recipient Of A Hodson Scholarship?

You’ll be notified about any scholarships through your applicant portal when you receive your admissions decision. All merit scholarships are awarded at the time of admission to the university, and there is no appeal process.

What Happens If I Win An Additional Scholarship From An Outside Source? Would It Be Added To This Award?

Private scholarships reduce your summer savings and work-study expectations. If your private scholarships total more than these expectations, any need-based scholarships will be adjusted based on the leftover amount.
