Overview
Open 2027–28 research-grant call for eligible academic staff at UGC-funded Hong Kong universities, with projects normally funded up to HK$2 million.
Complete grant details
The Research Grants Council General Research Fund supports basic and applied research by eligible academic staff at UGC-funded universities in Hong Kong. The 2027–28 call opened on 21 August 2026. Grant size is normally up to HK$2 million per project, with discipline-specific lower thresholds and stronger justification required for unusually large budgets.
Eligibility requirements
Principal Investigators must normally hold a full-time appointment in the university proper of a UGC-funded university, be in eligible academic staff grades from Professor to Assistant Lecturer, spend at least 80% of their time in degree or higher-degree work, and have salary wholly funded by the university proper. Visiting staff are eligible only under the RGC's stated full-time appointment conditions. Externally grant-supported staff are not eligible under the standard rule. Universities must verify eligibility before submission.
Tips for this grant
Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.
- Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
- Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
- Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
- Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.
Verification notes
Verified against the current 2027/28 RGC GRF call and scheme overview. The RGC Electronic System is open from 21 August to 30 October 2026. Grant size per project is normally up to HK$2 million. The current call gives a calendar deadline but no closing clock time, so the machine deadline is null. Institutional research offices may set earlier internal deadlines.
Job and Scholarship is the discovery and verification layer. Confirm eligibility, dates, salary/funding and application instructions on the original source before submitting anything.
