Overview
The Institute for Advanced Study invites qualified scholars of any nationality to apply for 2027–28 Historical Studies Memberships in Princeton, with support up to $40,000 for one term or $80,000 for a full academic year.
Complete fellowship details
General Memberships are available for Term I (20 September–17 December 2027), Term II (10 January–14 April 2028), or the full academic year. The School states funding of up to $40,000 for a single term and up to $80,000 for a full academic year; these are maximum limits, not guaranteed stipend amounts. Incoming Members from outside the Princeton area can receive limited travel reimbursement under School rules. Eligible applicants can also be considered simultaneously for specified Mellon or postdoctoral fellowships where their circumstances and research field meet the additional requirements.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must have a substantial publication record and a PhD or equivalent awarded no later than 31 July 2026. A current institutional affiliation is not required, and qualified candidates of any nationality are invited. Members are expected to reside at the Institute or in the immediate Princeton area during their term(s).
Tips for this fellowship
Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.
- Submit a proposal within the 1,500-word maximum plus a separate one-page bibliography.
- Applicants with a PhD from 2020 or later should arrange two reference letters.
- Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
- Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
- Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
- Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.
Verification notes
Verified on the School of Historical Studies' live 2027–28 application guidelines and FAQ. The application is live and closes 15 October 2026; no closing clock time is stated. The School explicitly says the $40,000/$80,000 figures are maximum limits rather than guaranteed amounts.
Job and Scholarship is the discovery and verification layer. Confirm eligibility, dates, salary/funding and application instructions on the original source before submitting anything.
