The International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling is a joint doctoral programme of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and Universität Hamburg. The annual open-topic call covers interdisciplinary Earth-system research and typically recruits several doctoral candidates. Interviews are scheduled for 26–27 November 2026, with positions normally starting 1 March 2027 or later by individual agreement.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants need a first-class MSc degree or upper-second-class MSc honours degree, or a national equivalent, with a written Master's thesis. Bachelor’s and Master’s studies together should amount to at least 300 ECTS or equivalent. Relevant backgrounds include physics, geophysical sciences, meteorology, oceanography, ecology, mathematics, computer science, engineering, economics and political science. Applicants still completing an MSc may apply if their degree is in its final phase. Strong quantitative skills and fluent English are expected.
