Invest in Open Infrastructure (IOI) is seeking an experienced Director of Business Development to lead its fundraising, business development, marketing and communications functions while contributing to client engagements.

Job Title: Director of Business Development Organization: Invest in Open Infrastructure (IOI) Job Location: Remote – ideally within ±3 hours of EST Work Format: Fully Remote Position Type: Full-time with benefits Salary: US$139,256 annually with benefits Closing Date: 12 October 2026

The senior-level position will support IOI’s work to increase investment in and adoption of open infrastructure, helping strengthen equitable access to and participation in research.

The successful candidate will report to the Executive Director and work within IOI’s distributed, fully remote team.

Strategic Planning

The Director of Business Development will:

• Contribute to the development and implementation of IOI’s strategic plan.
• Develop and implement a comprehensive business development strategy aligned with IOI’s mission, vision and goals.
• Identify emerging trends and opportunities.
• Support market research and analysis to identify new opportunities for growth.

Team Leadership

The role will lead and mentor a blended team of staff and contractors, currently including a Development & Communications Coordinator and Horizon Europe Strategist.

Responsibilities include setting direction, managing deliverables, supporting professional growth and fostering a collaborative working environment.

Business Development & Fundraising

The Director will:

• Develop strategies to increase and diversify revenue.

• Identify sustainable funding opportunities.

• Cultivate relationships with mission-aligned organizations, corporations and foundations.

• Manage existing donor, client and funder relationships.

• Develop fundraising plans, proposals and grant applications.

• Explore new fundraising and revenue models.

• Track the funding pipeline and provide recommendations to senior leadership and the Board.

Marketing & Communications

Working jointly with the Executive Director, the successful candidate will help coordinate IOI’s marketing and communications strategy.

This includes overseeing communications activities, guiding brand positioning and messaging, managing communications capacity and contributing directly to content production where necessary.

Client Delivery

The Director will participate in teams delivering client engagements, contributing expertise in:

• Business development strategy
• Fundraising strategy
• Product-market fit
• Sustainability strategy

The role will also contribute to the scoping, costing and preparation of proposals for client engagements.

Partnership Development

The successful candidate will build and maintain relationships with donors, clients, partners and other key stakeholders.

They will also collaborate on partnerships and joint initiatives designed to expand IOI’s reach and impact.

Required Skills And Experience

Applicants should have:

• At least eight years of experience developing and implementing long-term fundraising and partnership strategies.

• Leadership experience within a small, cross-functional and collaborative team.

• Experience managing teams of approximately 2–5 people.

• Knowledge of membership or subscription models, fee-for-service opportunities, grants and philanthropic support.

• Experience building relationships with mission-supporting ventures.

• Experience costing proposals and conducting market research and business analysis.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Experience preparing proposals, donor and client correspondence, presentations and research.

• Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and maintain strong internal relationships.

• A high degree of autonomy, accountability, discretion and confidentiality.

• Interest in working within a dynamic, mission-driven and technology-focused organization.

Desirable Experience

Additional useful experience includes:

• Data analysis
• CRM software
• Marketing and communications strategy
• Open research or open infrastructure
• Advisory or consulting work
• Fundraising best practices

Remote Work & Benefits

IOI operates as a fully remote organization, with staff working across three continents and project leadership based in US Eastern Time.

Candidates should ideally be within approximately three hours of the EST time zone and must be available for at least three hours per day overlapping with project leadership.

Employees may receive a stipend of up to US$3,000 for equipment and home-office needs.

US-based employees are employed through Code for Science and Society (CS&S), with benefits including health insurance and retirement.

UK-based candidates may be employed through IOI’s UK entity, while candidates elsewhere may be considered for contract arrangements.

Applicants must already have legal authorization to work where they are based. Visa support is not available for this position.

IOI partners with funders, research institutions, libraries, publishers and infrastructure providers to support better decisions about what to fund, adopt, govern and sustain.
