Applicants who obtained their doctorate less than five years before the fellowship should consider the Max Weber Programme instead. Candidates cannot apply for both the Max Weber and Jean Monnet Fellowships.

How Are Applicants Selected?

Candidates are selected based on their CV, research proposal, and academic references .

What Is the Benefit of the Award?

Successful fellows receive a basic grant of €2,850 per month .

Additional benefits may include:

Household allowance: up to €310 per month for an eligible partner living with the fellow in Florence.

Dependent child allowance: €210 per month for each eligible dependent child living with the fellow in Florence.

Research expenses: €650 for eligible research expenses, such as conference participation.

Travel expenses: reimbursement for the fellow’s incoming and outgoing travel, up to a combined maximum of €1,200 .

Visa expenses: reimbursement of eligible visa-related costs for fellows requiring a visa for Italy, up to €250 .

Assistance with visa and residence requirements for non-EU fellows.

Assistance can also be provided to eligible non-EU family members.

The fellowship itself is not taxed by the Institute, although fellows must comply with any applicable tax requirements.

Fellows must have adequate medical insurance during their stay and may either provide evidence of their own insurance or subscribe to the EUI’s private health insurance scheme at their own expense.

How Long Will the Award Last?

The Jean Monnet Fellowship lasts one year (12 months) , running from September to August .

For the 2027-28 academic year, the fellowship begins in September 2027.

Fellows who arrive after the beginning of September or leave before the end of the fellowship may have their grant reduced or terminated. No grant is paid for August if the fellow leaves before the fellowship ends.

Fellows are also expected to produce a publication from their research, such as an EUI Working Paper, scientific journal article, or publication with a reputable academic publisher .

Applicants are encouraged to register early, particularly because referees must submit their reference letters by the application deadline.

Required documents include:

CV with publication list – PDF.

Letter of motivation – 1–2 pages in PDF format.

Research proposal – 2–4 pages in PDF format.

Passport copy – JPG format.

Two academic reference letters submitted directly online by the referees.

Applicants should register their referees as early as possible. Once referee details are registered, the referees will receive an automatic email requesting their references.

Both reference letters must be submitted by 23 October 2026 at 14:00 CEST . References submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.

The research proposal and motivation letter must also comply with the EUI Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence for Research. Applicants should not have generative AI autonomously write substantial or integral parts of these documents. Where AI is used to produce novel content, applicants must acknowledge and reference the AI-generated portions.
