Overview
JICA's 2027 Nikkei Leaders Programme is accepting applications from eligible Nikkei in Mexico and ten other Latin American countries for supported master's, doctoral or pre-degree research study in Japan.
Complete fellowship details
The programme is designed to develop future leaders of Nikkei communities. JICA provides subsidies toward stay and study costs in Japan for applicants who wish to enter, have been admitted to, or are already in Japanese postgraduate programmes. Around 10 participants are planned across 11 eligible Latin American countries.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants are generally Nikkei descendants of Japanese immigrants up to the third generation, must be under 40 years old on 1 April of the Japanese fiscal year in which study begins, hold a bachelor's degree, and have admission, enrolment or informal acceptance toward a Japanese postgraduate programme. Applicants need Japanese sufficient for daily life, suitable physical and mental health, must not be active military personnel, and cannot work or receive another scholarship while supported by JICA.
Tips for this fellowship
Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.
- Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
- Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
- Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
- Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.
Verification notes
Verified on the current JICA Mexico page for Convocatoria 2027. The page states an application period of 1 July–25 September 2026 but does not publish a closing clock time, so deadline is represented only as deadline_date.
Job and Scholarship is the discovery and verification layer. Confirm eligibility, dates, salary/funding and application instructions on the original source before submitting anything.
