Overview
JSPS is accepting its FY2027 first open call for Short-Term (PE) fellowships enabling eligible North American and European PhD students or recent PhD researchers to conduct research in Japan.
Complete research opportunity details
The fellowship supports collaborative research at eligible Japanese host institutions for 1 to 12 months across humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Applications are submitted by a host researcher in Japan through the host institution. Host institutions may set internal deadlines substantially earlier than the JSPS deadline.
Eligibility requirements
Candidates must satisfy the Short-Term (PE) nationality/residency or continuous-research conditions for eligible North American and European countries and have an excellent research record. They must either have a foreign doctoral degree within the program's six-year window or be enrolled in a foreign doctoral program and expect the PhD within two years of the fellowship start. Prior recipients of specified JSPS postdoctoral fellowships and people holding a Japanese resident card with a mailing address in Japan at the JSPS deadline are not eligible. A qualified Japanese host researcher and institution are required.

- Contact a supervisor before applying only when the official instructions recommend or require it.
