Overview
JSPS is accepting the first FY2027 open-call round for its Short-term (PE) Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan, supporting eligible doctoral students and recent PhD researchers from Europe and North America to conduct collaborative research with a host at a Japanese university or research institution.
Complete research opportunity details
The Short-term (PE) programme covers all fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences and supports research stays of one to twelve months. For the FY2027 first call, JSPS plans approximately 20 fellowships, with fellowship starts between 1 April 2027 and 31 March 2028. Financial support includes round-trip airfare under JSPS rules, a monthly maintenance allowance of JPY 362,000 for PhD holders or JPY 200,000 for eligible non-PhD holders when research starts in Japan, overseas travel insurance, and a JPY 200,000 settling-in allowance for fellows with a tenure of at least three months, subject to programme conditions. A separate research-support allowance may be available to the Japanese host researcher through the host institution.
Eligibility requirements
The Short-term (PE) programme is for eligible PhD students or PhD researchers connected to Europe and North America under JSPS's country/residency/research-history rules. Candidates must satisfy the detailed nationality or permanent-residency/research-history criteria and doctoral-status rules published by JSPS. The programme page lists the United States, Canada, EU countries, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway and Russia among the eligible countries, with additional conditions described for research history and diplomatic relations. Candidates who have already started specified JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship programmes are not eligible. A Japanese host researcher at an eligible Japanese research institution submits the application through the institution.
