The FY2027 first open call for the JSPS Short-term (PE) Postdoctoral Fellowship is open. Fellowships last 1 to 12 months and cover research in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Financial support stated by JSPS includes a round-trip air ticket under JSPS rules, monthly maintenance allowance of JPY 362,000 for PhD holders or JPY 200,000 for non-PhD holders when research begins, a JPY 200,000 settling-in allowance for fellows with at least three months' tenure, overseas travel insurance, and a research-support allowance available to the host for cooperative research expenses.
Eligibility requirements
Candidates must meet JSPS Short-term (PE) nationality/residence and research-history rules. The current program page lists eligible countries as the United States, Canada, EU countries, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway and Russia. Candidates must have obtained a doctorate from a foreign graduate school within the program's six-year window as of the applicable fiscal-year date, or be enrolled at doctoral level and expected to receive a PhD within two years from the fellowship start. A Japanese host researcher at an eligible institution submits the application through the host institution.
