Complete scholarship details
Applications for the current round opened 18 May 2026 and close 31 October 2026. The scholarship provides a fortnightly stipend at a 2026 full-time rate of A$39,500 per year for up to 3.5 years; the stipend may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, parenting and partner leave. At least one scholarship is offered. There is no separate scholarship application: eligible students are automatically considered after applying for admission to the relevant University of Melbourne PhD programme for commencement in the award year.
Eligibility requirements
Domestic and international students are eligible. Candidates must receive an offer for the Doctor of Philosophy – Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences commencing in the scholarship award year and undertake a research project in Microbiology within the University of Melbourne's Department of Microbiology. Selection is based on the faculty scholarship score, with preference given to domestic candidates who completed an Honours degree or the Master of Biomedical Science at the University of Melbourne.
Tips for this scholarship
Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.
- Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
- Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
- Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
- Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.
Verification notes
Verified against the University of Melbourne's current scholarship page. It shows open automatic consideration from 18 May to 31 October 2026, domestic and international eligibility, the Microbiology PhD/department requirement, at least one award, and a A$39,500 per year 2026 stipend for up to 3.5 years. The page does not publish a closing time, so no machine timestamp was invented. Automatic consideration occurs through the official PhD admission application.
