The National AI Innovation Challenge (NAIC) 2026 is now open to Nigerian developers, startups, researchers, and builders. This national build-only contest supports the development, adoption, and scale of Nigeria’s sovereign AI, N-ATLAS. Applicants must submit a working technical artefact integrated with N-ATLAS. Concept notes and mock-ups are not eligible.

About the Contest
The challenge is led by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy. It is implemented through ONDI and NCAIR in partnership with Awarri Technologies.
Participants are invited to build developer tools, voice-first applications, or sector-specific fine-tuned models using N-ATLAS. As a result, the contest focuses on practical solutions with real-world validation.

Applications open: 22 Sept 2026 Build and submission period: 22 Sept – 12 Oct 2026 Verification, shortlisting, and acceleration: 15 Oct – 4 Nov 2026 Finals at the Digital Nigeria Showcase: 8 – 10 Nov 2026
All applicants receive onboarding support and technical clinics. Meanwhile, shortlisted teams gain access to API credentials, compute credits, and mentorship during the acceleration phase. Winners may also receive:

Eligibility To apply, teams and applicants must meet the following conditions:
All team members must be Nigerian citizens or registered Nigerian entities Individual applicants must be Nigerian citizens aged 18 or above Company applicants must be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission Diaspora teams are permitted if at least 50% of team members are based in Nigeria Non-Nigerian citizens or entities are not eligible Each team may submit to only one problem statement Applications and supporting materials must be in English Submission must be original work and must not have been previously awarded in another competition Every submission must include a functioning technical artefact integrated with N-ATLAS Concept-only proposals, mock-ups, or research papers without a functional build are not eligible
Applicants are expected to submit:
A working artefact such as a repository, deployed application, published model, live API, or dataset Documentation showing N-ATLAS integration Real-world validation evidence, including user testing, real data, or benchmarks Technical documentation covering architecture, setup, and usage A 3–5 minute video demonstration Team profile with names, affiliations, and roles Institutional endorsement letter for the Academia & Research track, or CAC certificate and valid ID for the Innovation & Enterprise track
