Overview
A two- to three-year postdoctoral fellowship for early-career scientists to conduct independent radio astronomy, multi-wavelength, instrumentation, computation or theory research connected to NRAO facilities and mission.
Complete fellowship details
Applications for the 2027 Jansky Fellowship Program are due 28 October 2026 at 11:59 PM EDT. Appointments may be based at NRAO/GBO sites in Socorro/Albuquerque, Charlottesville or Green Bank, with compelling split or non-resident U.S.-university arrangements also possible. The typical starting salary is US$75,000. Fellows receive US$17,000 per year for travel and other research expenses; non-NRAO hosts receive an additional US$3,000 per year toward local institutional expenses. Appointments are awarded for between two and three years. Reference letters are due separately on 11 November 2026 at 11:59 PM EDT.
Eligibility requirements
Open to early-career applicants of any nationality who, at the fellowship start, normally have no more than five years of postdoctoral experience; well-justified exceptions are considered. Applicants need a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics/physics, computer science or a related field and must propose work connected to NRAO's mission, facilities or science. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. NRAO states that it does not sponsor H-1B visas for this position; qualified candidates needing sponsorship may be considered for J-1 Exchange Visitor sponsorship subject to applicable eligibility.
Tips for this fellowship
Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.
- Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
- Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
- Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
- Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.
Verification notes
Verified against the current official NSF NRAO Jansky Fellowship Program page on 2 September 2026. The page explicitly identifies the 2027 call, gives the 28 October 2026 11:59 PM EDT application deadline, salary and research/travel allocation, eligibility, application documents and the official Dayforce careers route. EDT is UTC-4, so the application deadline is normalized to 29 October 2026 03:59 UTC.
