The study abroad program allows a student to leave AUS to study at a partner university for one or two semesters while earning AUS credit to count toward graduation. AUS actively seeks to send as many students as possible to study abroad. We have numerous exchange agreements with individual institutions and through consortia around the world, and offer many exciting options for our students to study abroad during the fall and spring semesters.

STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM OPTIONS

Bilateral Partners: Bilateral exchange students pay tuition and required fees to their home institution and all other fees to the partner university for the semester/s of study. Students may apply to up to three bilateral partner universities per semester. Complete an online IXO application here.

Please note: * Students going to Maastricht University, Neoma School of Business, and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona will only be able to register for four courses or 12 credits maximum.

• International Student Exchange Programs (ISEP): Students who go abroad through ISEP can choose from many universities worldwide. Please have a look at the complete list of ISEP institutions in the US and abroad, or search for a program by major. Initially you apply via IXO’s online application system here, and then, once approved by IXO as an ISEP study abroad applicant, you will complete ISEP’s online application. ISEP exchange students pay tuition and all fees (including shared dorm housing and a ‘meals and incidentals’ fee) directly to AUS, and do not have to pay anything upon arrival at the host university, i.e. meals and housing will be provided by your host university without charge.

COST FOR OUTGOING STUDENTS

• Application fee:

• Applicants applying to bilateral partners must pay a non-refundable application fee of AED 525 by the application deadline. Please fill out the Proof of Payment Form, Outgoing Bilateral Application Fee, that could be found on this link, and send it to [email protected] and [email protected].

• ISEP applicants pay a 735 AED non-refundable fee upon submitting their application to IXO. IXO will credit this fee toward the applicant’s ISEP fees later when students submit the online application to ISEP. Please fill out the Proof of Payment Form, Outgoing ISEP Application Fee, that could be found on this link, and send it to [email protected] and [email protected].

• Non-refundable deposit: If you receive and accept a nomination to a bilateral partner university, you must pay a non-refundable deposit of AED 1000 before proceeding with the application process through the host university. This deposit will count toward your tuition during you study abroad semester. Please fill out the Proof of Payment Form, Outgoing Bilateral Deposit to Hold Placement, that could be found on this link, and send it to [email protected] and [email protected].

• ISEP Placement Fee: Once ISEP places the student at a host university, the student will owe ISEP USD 450 as a placement fee, whether or not the student accepts the placement. Please fill out the Proof of Payment Form, Outgoing ISEP Placement Fee, that could be found on this link, and send it to [email protected] and [email protected].

• Tuition: Pay as normal for a full course load (12-16 credits*).

• AUS Student Activity Fee: All outgoing study abroad students are responsible to pay the AUS Student Activities Fee.

• AUS Health Plan I Fee: Any outgoing student listed on Health Center Plan I prior to their study abroad must pay the Health Center Plan I Fee during their study abroad semester.

• Lab/technical fees: Your host institution may charge these according to their fee structure, and the mix of courses you choose to take while abroad.

• Insurance: Students are responsible for arranging their own coverage while abroad. All schools require that students have coverage, and many host universities offer student plans. Talk to the advisor at your host university for more information. Outgoing ISEP students must purchase the insurance coverage offered by ISEP.

• Housing: Students are responsible for making their own housing arrangements. Partner universities offer housing to exchange students. ISEP provides sharing options for all exchange students, and students pay the mandatory fee directly to AUS using the AUS sharing room rate. Students will still apply for housing through the host institution and are responsible for all deadlines, deposits and extra costs.

• Financial grants/scholarships: AUS students on grants/scholarships must obtain approval from the Office of Financial Grants and Scholarships before starting a semester abroad at a host university. In cases where the AUS student pays tuition and/or housing fees directly to AUS for study abroad, the student will continue to apply most AUS grants and/or AUS-funded scholarships for that semester abroad. Students may not apply AUS financial grants or AUS-funded scholarships toward any fees paid directly to their host university. Students receiving AUS financial assistance for their studies should speak with the Financial Grants and Scholarship Manager for more information. Students sponsored by an organization outside of AUS are responsible for gaining approval and making necessary arrangements with their sponsor.

• Sponsored students: AUS students on external sponsorship should inform IXO and obtain approval from their sponsor through the sponsorship office.

In order to apply for our study abroad programs, a student must meet the following eligibility requirements:

• The student must be in good standing.

• The student must have 45 credits by start of the semester abroad (not at the start of the application). Credits earned in Achievement Academy Bridge Program (AABP) or prep (00) courses do not count toward this total.

• The student must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA (most programs require at least a 2.75 CGPA).

• The student cannot go during his/her graduating semester.

• The student cannot do their senior design course abroad.

Please note:

• These are the minimum requirements. Other restrictions may apply, depending on your major, etc.

• Study abroad students departing for their host university from AUS at the end of the fall semester may miss no more than the last week of AUS classes. Please check the AUS academic calendar for dates, and make sure the timing will work so that you can attend orientation at your host university. Students remain fully responsible for all material covered during the fall semester at AUS, but also AUS faculty are required to accommodate their earlier departure in those cases where students can document a conflict with the start of the spring semester at their host university.

• You may be able to study abroad in the country where you hold citizenship. This will depend on the length of time that you have lived there, and your age while living there. Come and talk to us about your situation at IXO, Main Building, Ground Floor, MG50.

• Research your options. Decide where you would like to study and start by doing a search by location, school, program or major. We encourage you to drop by the IXO office (Main Building, Ground Floor, MG50 and adjacent corridor), which has resources including IXO Peer Representatives (all of whom have previously studied abroad themselves), ISEP guides, advising sheets about other study abroad locations, major specific brochures, and travel guides. Hang out, talk to an advisor, make friends with an exchange student, or read about your many options.

• "Apply Now". From this page, start your application. Your application will start with a series of applications, and will prompt you to create an account. Be sure to complete all of your application requirements before the deadline posted in IXO. IXO staff will review your application and notify you of a decision.

• For ISEP applicants: after creating the account here. You need to read and sign (i.e. mark as read) the "ISEP information" which you can find under the Learning Content section of your application. After completing this and if you meet the requirements, the IXO Representatives will send you the credentials (i.e. username and password) you need to start the ISEP online application

• Commit or Decline. Accepted students will then have the chance to proceed with the application process or to withdraw. If you proceed, then the IXO Representatives will nominate you to the host university and the host university will invite you to complete their application process. If you decline, you may apply again during the next application cycle, upon payment of another application fee.

• In addition, all students must get courses approved and submit the completed and fully-signed IXO Course Permission Form to the Register's Office by the last day of spring semester classes, and students going abroad in the spring semester must submit this form by last day of fall semester classes. Unless you turn in the signed Course Permission Form within the deadline, you will not receive academic credit for the courses you take while abroad. There are no exceptions.
