Princeton in Africa (PiAf) is seeking a Fellowships & Operations Director to join its program team in Princeton, New Jersey.

PiAf is an independent nonprofit organization that develops young leaders while supporting impactful organizations across Africa.

Over the past 27 years, the program has placed nearly 800 Fellows with more than 140 organizations in 37 African countries.

The Fellowships & Operations Director will work closely with the Deputy Director to support the delivery of PiAf’s year-long fellowship program, which places approximately 50 recent graduates and young professionals each year with organizations across roughly 18 African countries.

The position reports to the Deputy Director and Executive Director and will manage the Program Coordinator.

Program Management

The Fellowships & Operations Director will:

  • Coordinate recruitment of more than 700 applicants, including webinars, applicant enquiries, alumni information sessions and recruitment activities.

  • Lead the application, interview and placement process for applicants.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with international programs and academic departments.

  • Support Fellows throughout their placements through advising, regular check-ins and issue resolution.

  • Organize logistics and facilitate sessions for the annual four-day virtual Fellows’ Orientation.

  • Manage logistics, budgets, bookings, Fellow travel and reimbursements for the annual Fellows’ Retreat held in Africa.

  • Travel to Africa for site visits with Fellows, host organizations and partners and to manage the mid-year Fellows’ Retreat. Approximately one to two months of travel per year is expected.

  • Work with Alumni Coordinators on professional development, global citizenship and leadership sessions.

  • Provide ongoing support to Fellows and fellowship organizations.

  • Lead complex or high-priority Fellow matters, including visa challenges, health concerns and interpersonal issues, in collaboration with the Deputy Director.

  • Work with senior leadership to monitor and address Fellow health, safety and security.

  • Manage matters relating to PiAf’s medical insurance and emergency assistance providers.

  • Manage PiAf’s network of nearly 800 alumni and support alumni programming, mentoring and regional events.

  • Liaise with the Alumni Board and maintain alumni evaluation and data-collection tools.

  • Assist with program activities, events, communications and record-keeping.

  • Coordinate program-related work with interns and volunteers.

  • Serve as the primary lead for GPS (Graduate Professional Systems)/Terra Dotta, PiAf’s application and tracking platform.

Operations

The successful candidate will also:

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director on operational planning, internal communications and organizational systems.

  • Coordinate recruitment, onboarding and training for staff, interns, volunteers, reviewers and interviewers.

  • Maintain updated job descriptions and support HR compliance.

  • Maintain accurate staff timesheets and support consistent expense reporting.

  • Manage the host organization program cost invoice payment process.

  • Process fellowship stipends and reimbursements.

Additional Support

Responsibilities will also include maintaining agreed office hours, providing office administrative support when required, assisting with communications and mass mailings, supporting logistics for the annual gala and undertaking other duties as needed.

Skills And Qualifications

Candidates should have:

  • A clear understanding of and passion for Princeton in Africa’s mission and a commitment to or long-term interest in Africa.

  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably in international development, education, international or African studies, nonprofit management or a related field.

  • The ability to mentor Fellows and foster young leaders.

  • At least five years of work experience with an international fellowship, volunteer or education program, or comparable experience with organizations similar to PiAf’s host organizations.

  • Strong preference will be given to candidates who have lived, travelled independently or studied abroad in Africa. Experience living, travelling or working in a lower- or middle-income country will also be considered.

  • Experience facilitating group sessions and managing event logistics and budgets.

  • Excellent organizational, communication and attention-to-detail skills.

  • Strong English writing skills.

  • Strong listening and conflict-management skills.

  • The ability to manage multiple responsibilities and changing priorities.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Google Workspace.

  • General technological proficiency. Experience with CRM systems such as Terra Dotta and Eleo is an advantage.

  • Willingness to work occasional nights and weekends.

  • Experience working with alumni associations is an advantage.

Candidates should be proactive, patient, creative and adaptable, with the ability to take ownership of work from idea through execution.

Salary And Benefits

The position offers a salary of US$65,000–US$70,000, depending on experience and skills.

Location And Work Authorization

The position is based in Princeton, New Jersey, with a hybrid working arrangement. Princeton in Africa can only consider applicants who are authorized to work in the United States.
