Principal, Safety and Risk Management

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal, Safety and Risk Management based in United States. This is a senior clinical leadership role responsible for shaping and owning safety and clinical risk management across a nationwide behavioral health provider network. You will build and operate the end-to-end system for identifying, investigating, analyzing, and addressing clinical safety events. The role has significant impact on how risks are detected, escalated, and translated into improvements in care delivery. You will serve as a key point of response for high-risk clinical situations while providing compassionate, evidence-informed support to providers and internal teams. Working across Clinical Operations, Legal, Compliance, Data, and Product, you will establish standards, policies, measurement frameworks, and governance processes. You will also translate safety insights into upstream improvements and help shape a growing national patient safety function. This is an opportunity for an experienced behavioral health patient safety or clinical risk leader to build a critical function while it is still evolving.

Own the complete operating system for reported safety events, from intake and triage through investigation, systematic event analysis, corrective and preventive action, and verified case closure. Build a strong reporting culture that encourages safety events to be surfaced and addressed effectively. Lead investigations of serious events, including root cause and apparent cause analyses, while establishing investigation standards and reference taxonomies for use at scale. Translate investigation findings into corrective and preventive actions with clear owners and deadlines, and drive those actions through verified closure across teams. Respond to high-risk clinical events requiring immediate attention, including situations involving impaired providers or adverse patient behavior, while providing timely and compassionate guidance. Develop and maintain patient safety and event management protocols and policies in partnership with Clinical Operations, Legal, and Compliance. Define safety metrics and baseline event rates, own the Clinical Risk Dashboard, and analyze trends and contributing factors. Prepare metrics, trend analyses, and case narratives for quarterly Quality and Patient Safety reporting to clinical leadership and the board. Support Patient Safety Review Committee and peer-led governance activities while ensuring investigations meet regulatory, accreditation, and delegated credentialing expectations. Provide evidence of clinical oversight required for payer and accreditation reviews. Build and execute detailed project plans for new and emerging patient safety programs in collaboration with clinical leadership. Partner with clinical product teams to incorporate safety and risk management expertise into product development. Help shape the staffing model, responsibilities, and operating structure of the safety and risk function as it grows. Requirements Active clinical license as a master's-level therapist (LCSW, LPC, LMFT), doctoral clinical psychologist (PhD/PsyD), or psychiatric clinician (PMHNP-BC, MD/DO). 7+ years of experience in healthcare patient safety or clinical risk management, including direct ownership of event investigation and corrective action. Demonstrated experience building or substantially scaling a safety event or clinical risk program from project planning through launch and growth. Strong knowledge of established patient safety methods, clinical industry standards, and structured investigation practices. Sound clinical judgment when triaging and escalating issues, with the ability to distinguish clinical matters from operational or legal questions and route them appropriately. Strong data fluency, including the ability to define meaningful metrics, critically assess dashboards, interpret trends, and develop deeper analytical approaches. Proven ability to drive corrective actions to verified closure across teams outside your direct management structure. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document investigations clearly and present findings to senior clinical and business leaders. Deep commitment to ethical, patient-centered care and continuous quality improvement. Comfort operating as an early leader within a developing function and adapting to new technologies and evolving processes. Certification in Quality and Patient Safety, Healthcare Quality and Management, Healthcare Risk Management, or an equivalent patient safety credential is strongly preferred.
