Product Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Product Engineer based in Canada. This is a fully remote product engineering role focused on solving meaningful customer problems from discovery through delivery. You’ll work closely with product, UX, and engineering teammates while having real ownership over what gets built and why. The role combines hands-on software development with customer conversations, technical exploration, and continuous product improvement. You’ll work extensively with AI-powered coding agents and help shape the internal workflows, tooling, context, and guardrails that make them effective. You’ll contribute across a modern stack centered on Ruby on Rails, Vue.js, GraphQL, MySQL, cloud infrastructure, and automation. Partner with product, UX, and engineering teams to understand customer challenges and lead end-to-end solutions from discovery and design through development and deployment. Engage directly with customers through calls, support conversations, and product usage insights to inform engineering and product decisions. Design, build, test, review, and ship reliable software while maintaining high standards for code quality and maintainability. Use AI coding agents as an integral part of daily development and continuously improve the context, tooling, and guardrails that help agents work effectively within the codebase. Contribute to the internal software factory that routes work between project management systems, coding agents, and human review, including developing metrics to evaluate its effectiveness. Build and maintain private and public GraphQL APIs supporting the product interface, CLI, and customer automation. Lead technical investigations, prototypes, and architectural explorations to validate solutions before committing significant engineering resources. Identify technical debt and architectural improvements, advocate for sound engineering practices, and contribute to best practices across Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, and database design. Deliver work on a predictable cadence and proactively communicate risks, blockers, or changes in scope. Mentor colleagues and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. Participate in the on-call rotation and troubleshoot issues across Ruby on Rails, Vue.js, GraphQL, MySQL, and related infrastructure. Requirements Strong product engineering experience with a demonstrated ability to own technical problems from customer discovery through implementation, launch, and iteration. Approximately 5+ years of Ruby on Rails experience , or around 7+ years with a comparable web framework such as Spring, Django, or Node.js. Strong understanding of software architecture, including well-defined interfaces, separation of concerns, and SOLID principles. Proven experience designing performant relational data models, particularly with MySQL or comparable RDBMS technologies. Strong knowledge of indexing, normalization and denormalization strategies, query optimization, and diagnosing performance issues. Experience building and maintaining production web applications with a focus on reliability, testing, maintainability, and scalability. Demonstrated product judgment, including the ability to understand user needs, challenge assumptions, prioritize effectively, and reduce unnecessary scope. Experience using AI development tools in practical engineering workflows, with sound judgment about where they add value and where human intervention remains necessary. Strong communication and collaboration skills, combined with empathy, pragmatism, intellectual honesty, and a willingness to learn. Ability to work effectively on ambiguous problems and independently develop solutions where established patterns may not exist. Experience with GraphQL and API development is highly relevant. Experience with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform is a strong asset. Familiarity with Sidekiq or other Rails job-processing systems, Redis, and large-scale web applications is beneficial. Experience building agent-based development tools, evaluation harnesses, custom tools, MCP servers, or internal AI workflows is an additional asset. Exposure to systems supporting thousands of users, millions of events, or organizations operating hundreds of applications or microservices is advantageous.
