Foth is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to support a variety of environmentally related projects. This role requires strong technical expertise in geotechnical engineering, focusing on the design and analysis of earth structures, marine foundations, and heavy-lift foundation support. The candidate will assess soil and rock conditions to ensure stable foundations and safe infrastructure, addressing environmental aspects and collaborating with multi-discipline teams. This role is open to hybrid or in-office work in our Duluth or Minneapolis, MN offices. Up to 15% travel is possible with this role.
Project Leadership: Lead project design through technical reports, geotechnical calculations, analysis, and modeling; demonstrate initiative as a self-starter who is motivated to take on design elements and work through new technical challenges independently Earth Structures & Foundations: Provide design, construction observation, and general geotechnical characterization support. Perform geotechnical analysis, design calculations, and ensure soil stability for heavy civil, upland, and in-water environmental remediation projects Marine Structural Foundations: Support pile driving analysis, dynamic pile testing, CAPWAP. Collaborate with structural engineers to create complementary foundation designs Heavy-Lift Foundations: Perform geotechnical analyses for heavy-lift and temporary works foundations, including settlement estimates, bearing capacity evaluations, ground improvement needs, and soil-structure/geostructural interaction considerations; evaluate soil and rock properties and support practical design recommendations that account for site constraints and environmental considerations General Geotechnical: Collect data, analyze slope stability, manage groundwater, and assess geotechnical risks. Additionally, prepare boring logs, laboratory data summaries, and maintain general knowledge of geotechnical modeling software Geological Engineering : Interprete engineering properties within various geologic environments that compact. Prepare natural hazard related designs for specific geotechnical risks Field Work & Construction Support: Prepare design calculations, develop field sampling plans, coordinate field work, provide construction observations, and perform site visits to analyze data Permit Preparation: Prepare permit documents for mine site development, dam safety, closure, reclamation, and financial assurance Proposal, Budgets, and Work Plans: Support proposal development, including project budget and schedule, and work plans
5+ years of experience performing civil engineering work with a geotechnical focus in heavy civil design and construction or mixed experience in the geotechnical and geological engineering space Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or related field
Master's Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or related field Experience designing waterfront facilities including pile, steel sheet, and slurry wall improvements Experience designing retaining walls, shallow and deep foundations including spread footings, drilled piers, piles, and caissons Experience designing dredging, slope stability, and in-water capping aspects of remediation projects Experience with GeoStudio® or other 2D/3D Geotechnical modeling software Engineer in Training (EIT) and/or Professional Engineering Certification (PE)
