Overview
An eight-year Royal Society early-career fellowship for outstanding scientists who need a flexible working pattern because of personal circumstances and want to build an independent research career at a UK university or research institution.
Complete fellowship details
The 2027 Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship is scheduled to open on 3 September 2026 and close on 29 October 2026, with decisions expected by 31 July 2027. The fellowship runs for eight years, with years six to eight subject to satisfactory progress at the mid-fellowship review. Applicants may request up to £1.87 million over eight years. Eligible costs stated by the Royal Society include a contribution to the award holder's salary, indirect and estate costs, equipment and research expenses including travel, a contribution to research-assistance salary and associated costs, support for new four-year PhD studentships, and relocation and visa costs for the applicant and dependants where justified.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must need flexible support because of personal circumstances such as parental or caring responsibilities and/or clinically diagnosed health conditions requiring a flexible working pattern. They must be in the early stages of their research career with up to six years of research experience since their PhD by the round closing date, must not hold a permanent post (including a proleptic appointment) in a university or not-for-profit organisation, and must not hold or previously have held an equivalent fellowship that establishes independent research status. Research must fall within the Royal Society's natural-sciences remit. Applicants may be of any nationality.
Tips for this fellowship
Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.
- Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
- Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
- Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
- Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.
Verification notes
Verified during this run against the current Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship page and Royal Society application-dates calendar. The official page currently shows Status: Closed with the 2027 round scheduled to open on 3 September 2026 and close on 29 October 2026, so this record is an upcoming opportunity. The checked official pages do not state a closing clock time, so only deadline_date is stored. Funding, duration and eligibility are limited to terms stated by the Royal Society.
