Overview

The Royal Society's International Exchanges Global Round 3 supports new natural-sciences collaborations between a UK-based scientist and an overseas scientist through short or repeated research visits. The 2026 Round 3 deadline is 24 September 2026 at 15:00 UK time.

Complete grant details

Funding depends on project duration: up to GBP 3,000 for a one-off visit lasting up to three months, up to GBP 6,000 for multiple visits within one year, or up to GBP 12,000 for multiple visits within two years. Eligible costs can include travel, subsistence and permitted research expenses. Global rounds support collaborations with countries and territories outside the UK. The scheme is intended to start new collaborations rather than continue established or recent collaborations between the same lead partners.

Eligibility requirements

The UK lead applicant and overseas co-applicant must each hold a PhD or have equivalent research experience, hold a fixed-term or permanent contract for the award duration at an eligible organisation, and be based in their respective countries and institutions when applying. Eligible hosts are universities or not-for-profit research institutions; industrial, private, commercial, university spin-out and government bodies are ineligible. The research must fall within the Royal Society's natural-sciences remit. The applicant and co-applicant cannot be former colleagues or a PhD student/supervisor pair, and other current-award restrictions in the scheme notes apply.

Tips for this grant

Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.

  1. Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
  2. Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
  3. Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
  4. Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.

Verification notes

Verified against the Royal Society's current International Exchanges page and the official 2026 Global Round 3 scheme notes. The scheme notes state a 24 September 2026 close at 15:00 UK time; on that date UK civil time is BST (UTC+1), so the structured deadline is 14:00 UTC. Funding caps and applicant/host eligibility are taken from the current Round 3 notes. The official page directs applicants to the Royal Society Flexi-Grant system.
