Overview
SASTE's fifth call funds 12–24 months of postdoctoral research in Austria for eligible researchers based in Sub-Saharan Africa, with stipend, housing and research-travel support.
Complete research opportunity details
The fifth SASTE call supports postdoctoral researchers employed by universities or research organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa to conduct 12–24 months of research in Austria with an approved host. Priority fields include Water Management, Renewable Energies, Nutritional Science, Human and Veterinary Medicine, with Technical Sciences/IT eligible where strongly integrated; digitalization and AI are explicitly welcomed. The programme aims to strengthen long-term research capacity and institutional collaboration between African and Austrian institutions.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must be based at a university or research organization in Sub-Saharan Africa, hold a PhD, normally be under 42 years old (women with childcare responsibilities may qualify up to 45 under the call), have 3–7 years of postdoctoral work experience in Sub-Saharan Africa, and hold a home-institution contract lasting at least two years after return. Applicants need an Austrian host/supervisor acceptance and sufficient English or German. Recent study/work in Austria within the six months before application is disqualifying under the call. The guidelines also identify preferred countries while keeping the programme focused on Sub-Saharan Africa more broadly.

- Contact a supervisor before applying only when the official instructions recommend or require it.
