Senior Software Engineer I, Payments

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer I, Payments based in United States. As a Senior Software Engineer I, Payments, you’ll build and operate critical financial systems responsible for moving billions of dollars through ACH and wire transfers. You’ll work on payment infrastructure where accuracy, security, reliability, and timely execution are essential to the customer experience. The role combines full-stack development with ownership of complex payment-processing workflows, integrations, reconciliation, and exception handling. You’ll make architectural decisions around transactional integrity, idempotency, failure recovery, and auditability while partnering closely with security, compliance, risk, and accounting teams. You’ll also help strengthen fraud-prevention controls and the applications that support escrow accounting and closing-day transactions. Working in a remote-first engineering environment, you’ll have significant ownership while collaborating across technical and customer-facing teams.

Design, build, maintain, and scale systems supporting ACH and wire transfers, including origination, settlement, reconciliation, and exception handling. Develop and strengthen payment-processing pipelines integrating with banking partners, payment rails, and third-party financial APIs. Implement and improve controls for wire fraud prevention, transaction verification, and anomaly detection in collaboration with security and compliance teams. Extend and maintain core frontend and backend applications supporting escrow accounting and closing-day money movement. Own and contribute to architectural decisions covering data integrity, idempotency, retry strategies, failure handling, and audit logging. Partner with Compliance, Risk, Accounting, and other stakeholders to ensure payment systems meet regulatory, operational, and audit requirements. Support compliance with standards and requirements such as NACHA rules, wire fraud regulations, and SOC 2 controls. Participate in an on-call rotation for payment-critical systems and respond methodically to production issues affecting financial transactions. Collaborate with product, design, compliance, and customer-facing teams to deliver reliable payment experiences. Mentor junior developers and contribute to engineering practices across teams of different sizes. Requirements: 5+ years of experience as a full-stack web developer with demonstrated ownership of complex production systems. Experience building or maintaining money-movement systems in banking, fintech, payment processing, or other regulated environments is strongly preferred. Strong understanding of transactional integrity, idempotency, failure-mode design, and reliability in financial systems. Experience making architectural decisions for large, complex, or high-stakes engineering projects. Familiarity with payment rails, banking APIs, and financial compliance standards such as NACHA, OFAC screening, PCI, or SOC 2 is a strong plus. Strong full-stack development capabilities using JavaScript, TypeScript, and Node.js. Experience with SPA frontend technologies such as React or MeteorJS. Experience with MongoDB and microservice architectures. Experience working with Kubernetes and AWS-based environments. Demonstrated ability to take end-to-end ownership of technical projects and production systems. Experience mentoring junior engineers and collaborating effectively across multiple engineering teams. Strong product judgment, attention to detail, and a focus on building reliable systems that users can trust with sensitive financial transactions. Strong communication and collaboration skills, particularly when working across engineering, product, compliance, security, and customer-facing functions.
