Full Job Description

Lead the architecture, design, development, and integration of system software, embedded firmware, device drivers, and engineering tools for next-generation Surface products, operating with minimal technical oversight. Translate product requirements into robust technical designs and implementation plans, while identifying dependencies, technical risks, security requirements, and cross-system impacts. Produce extensible, maintainable, secure, and performant code; conduct code reviews and drive improvements in coding standards, test coverage, automation, and engineering practices. Lead system-level debugging and root-cause analysis across hardware, firmware, drivers, and operating systems, using logs, traces, telemetry, debuggers, and other diagnostic tools to deliver durable fixes. Drive hardware bring-up, software and firmware integration, validation, manufacturing readiness, and release execution throughout the consumer-product lifecycle. Work effectively with software and firmware engineers at various levels, technical leads, and management, providing technical guidance and communicating design decisions, risks, progress, and engineering tradeoffs. Collaborate across hardware, validation, manufacturing, quality, and program management disciplines, as well as with silicon vendors, component suppliers, and other external partners, to resolve dependencies and deliver secure, reliable, and high-quality products. Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#. OR equivalent experience. Ability to quickly understand complex, unfamiliar code, with experience in technologies such as SPI, USB, I2C, I3C, UART, kernel or Windows internals, Windows or Linux drivers, UEFI, WDF, KMDF, or UMDF. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related technical field. 5+ years of experience on firmware development or qualifying Keyboard, Mouse,Touch, Pen, or Touchpad firmware across operating systems or platforms. Experience with new hardware bring-up and factory manufacturing, including product or subsystem development through multiple consumer-product releases. Experience with C/C++ design and coding skills; hands-on experience with Rust is highly desirable. Experience developing system or device drivers and debugging complex issues spanning multiple subsystems, owners, and organizations. Self-motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and independently drive work forward. Solid cross-functional communication skills across Program Management, Test, Hardware, and partner teams, with flexibility for domestic and international travel.
