Overview

An open international research-funding call supporting fundamental scientific work on solar radiation management, with letters of intent due in October 2026.

Complete grant details

The letter-of-intent deadline is 6 October 2026 at 12:00 noon Eastern Time. Invited full proposals are due 17 February 2027 at 12:00 noon Eastern Time. Standard awards may request up to US$1.5 million inclusive of 20% indirect costs over three years, with the foundation estimating up to 13 awards beginning 1 August 2027. Priority areas include materials for stratospheric aerosol injection and cirrus cloud thinning, laboratory characterization, approaches to minimize cirrus formation, turbulence modeling and improved global-scale modeling. Social-science research and in-situ aerosol-release field experiments are outside this call.

Eligibility requirements

Proposals may involve up to three PIs. PIs and participants may be based at U.S. or non-U.S. institutions subject to the official country and institution restrictions. University PIs must hold a tenured, tenure-track or equivalent position in a department with a PhD program. PIs at national laboratories or nonacademic institutions must be PhD-level full-time non-visiting research or senior scientists or equivalent. The foundation strongly encourages applications from scientists in the Global South.

Tips for this grant

Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.

  1. Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
  2. Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
  3. Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
  4. Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.
