ABOUT BREE

Full job description

ABOUT BREE Bree is a consumer finance platform that brings better, faster, and cheaper financial services to over half the Canadian population who live paycheck to paycheck. We operate in a huge, but overlooked market in a country with the least amount of financial technology innovation in the developed world. Our first act is to become the cheapest and best provider of short-term credit to the 20 million people in Canada who live paycheck to paycheck. More than 800,000 Canadians have already signed up with Bree and we believe we are just scratching the surface. We are in an exciting place where we have product market fit, explosive growth, and a clear path to becoming one of the most important FinTechs in Canada. ABOUT THE ROLE We’re looking for a Backend Engineering Co-op to join us for an 8-month term. You’ll work closely with experienced engineers on scoped backend projects across our services, data integrations, and payment flows. You’ll learn how to turn a technical problem into a well-tested, production-ready change, using AI development tools thoughtfully along the way. This is an 8-month co-op term. (January - August 2027) At Bree, co-ops are full members of the Engineering team. You’ll work on the same customer and business problems as full-time engineers, ship real production work, and take part in design discussions, code reviews, testing, and releases. We pair that responsibility with close mentorship, clear context, and projects scoped for you to make a meaningful impact from day one. WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Build and improve backend services, APIs, and integrations with mentorship from experienced engineers.
  • Contribute production changes in our TypeScript and Node.js services, including AWS Lambda-based workflows.
  • Write and improve automated tests, then help investigate and resolve issues that appear in staging or production.
  • Use AI development tools to speed up your work, while validating the code, tests, and behaviour before it ships.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Product, Design, and CX to understand requirements and test the user-facing impact of your work.
  • Document what you learn and contribute small improvements to our developer experience and engineering practices. WHAT YOU'LL NEED
  • Currently enrolled in a Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related post-secondary programme, and available for the full 8-month term.
  • Foundational experience with TypeScript or JavaScript, Node.js, and building APIs through coursework, internships, or personal projects.
  • Some familiarity with cloud services, serverless systems, or Infrastructure as Code is helpful, but not required.
  • Evidence of projects where you designed, built, or maintained software. A GitHub profile, portfolio, or course project is great.
  • Interest in using AI development tools responsibly, with care for testing, code quality, and security.
  • A learning mindset, clear communication, and enthusiasm for Bree’s mission of providing Canadian consumers with better financial services. BENEFITS
  • Compensation: $50-$70/hour CAD, based on experience and interview performance
  • Offer Matching: We're open to matching competing offers
  • Perks: $250 monthly lunch stipend, $150 monthly transportation stipend to help with commuting to the office, in-office amenities
  • Impact: Work on real production features, with mentorship and review from experienced engineers.
  • Growth: Regular mentorship, feedback, and opportunities to learn from engineers across the team.
  • Path to Full-Time: Opportunity for new grad full-time employment offer Location: 2 Bloor St W, Unit 2602, Toronto ON, M4W 3E2 (Subway connected directly to the Yonge/Bloor subway station) Hybrid schedule. In-office days are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday — we also throw in free lunch if you come in on Tuesdays and Fridays.
  • We'll be fully remote in January and most of February, move to 1 day in-office through March, then return to 3 days in-office starting April 2027.
