Full Job Description

Summary

Scopely Explore (formerly known as Niantic) seeks a Software Engineer to design and build the data infrastructure and experimentation platforms that power our mobile games. You will develop systems that help game, product, analytics, and engineering teams run trustworthy experiments, understand player behavior, and make better decisions at scale.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will write production code, make foundational architectural decisions, and operate critical distributed systems while guiding the technical direction of the platform. Beyond individual technical contribution, you will help lead and grow the Data Infrastructure organization by aligning engineers and cross-functional partners, mentoring engineers, and driving multi-team initiatives from strategy through delivery. Depending on team structure and business needs, this role may also include formal people-management responsibilities. We seek creative engineers with excellent technical judgment, strong interpersonal skills, and an eagerness to embrace new technologies and AI-native development methodologies. Do you want to build the foundations that enable faster learning and better player experiences across Scopely Explore?

Responsibilities

  • You design, build, and operate scalable data infrastructure and experimentation systems for both general product experimentation and game-specific use cases.

  • You lead the technical design of capabilities such as experiment assignment, player segmentation, exposure logging, telemetry processing, metric computation, guardrails, and reproducible analysis.

  • You build reliable batch and streaming data pipelines using technologies such as Apache Beam, Apache Spark, Ray, Apache Flink, and Apache Kafka.

  • You design data platforms on GCP using technologies such as BigQuery, Apache Iceberg, Google Cloud Storage, Kubernetes, Airflow, and Terraform.

  • You remain hands-on throughout the development lifecycle, contributing production code and solving complex problems in distributed computing, streaming, orchestration, and storage.

  • You develop effective methodologies and guardrails for AI-assisted and agentic engineering, including context management, automated validation, evaluations, human review, and responsible adoption.

  • You use AI-native workflows across your end-to-end responsibilities, including architecture exploration, implementation, testing, code review, documentation, debugging, incident response, and platform operations.

  • You maintain ownership of the correctness, security, performance, and maintainability of all work produced with AI assistance.

  • You evaluate new technologies pragmatically and apply them where they materially improve engineering velocity, platform reliability, or experimentation quality.

  • You lead the technical direction and delivery of the Data Infrastructure, aligning engineers and cross-functional partners around shared priorities, architectural decisions, trade-offs, and multi-quarter execution plans.

  • You coach and develop engineers through mentorship, actionable feedback, and technical guidance, while fostering a collaborative, high-performing team culture and remaining hands-on in architecture and critical implementation.

Qualifications

  • You have a demonstrated ability to use AI-native workflows across the full engineering lifecycle while independently evaluating and validating their output.

  • You have extensive experience designing, building, and operating production data platforms or other large-scale distributed systems.

  • You demonstrate strong programming ability in one or more of Java, Python, Go, or Rust. Experience with Java or Python is especially relevant to this role.

  • You have deep experience with cloud data infrastructure, preferably GCP and BigQuery.

  • You understand distributed computing and have production experience with frameworks such as Apache Beam, Apache Spark, or Ray.

  • You have experience building real-time data systems with technologies such as Apache Flink, Apache Kafka, or comparable streaming frameworks.

  • You have experience with orchestration, container, and infrastructure automation technologies such as Kubernetes, Airflow, and Terraform.

  • You understand modern storage and lakehouse architectures, including technologies such as Apache Iceberg and object storage systems such as Google Cloud Storage.

  • You have experience building experimentation, analytics, telemetry, or data products used by multiple engineering and product teams.

  • You understand the foundations of trustworthy experimentation, including assignment, exposure tracking, metric definition, data quality, reproducibility, and statistical interpretation.

  • You have experience defining technical direction and driving complex, cross-team initiatives while remaining directly involved in implementation.

  • Demonstrated history of leading delivery of complex projects involving multiple engineers and cross-functional partners, from strategy and planning through launch and operational ownership.

  • Experience managing and developing engineering teams, including hiring, performance feedback, career growth, and fostering an effective, inclusive team culture.

  • You communicate clearly and work effectively with distributed, cross-functional teams.

  • You are proficient in English. Japanese proficiency is a bonus.

Important notes about this position

  • This position is based in Tokyo. While offering flexibility, regular attendance in the office three days per week is expected.

  • The coding requirement is not optional and will be tested during the recruitment process. Candidates must be able to design, implement, test, and reason about production-quality software.

  • The use of AI tools is allowed and may form part of the development workflow. Candidates must understand, explain, validate, and take responsibility for the resulting work.
