Staff Engineer (Ingeniero Staff)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Engineer (Ingeniero Staff) based in Brazil. This is a senior individual-contributor role with organization-wide technical influence across complex product and platform initiatives. You will shape architecture, engineering standards, reliability practices, and technical strategy across multiple teams. The role remains deeply hands-on, with regular production coding, design work, reviews, and technical problem-solving. You will work across services, APIs, data models, event-driven systems, and shared platforms to solve high-impact engineering challenges. A major part of the role is multiplying engineering impact through mentorship, technical design, and influence without formal authority. You will also help guide incident response, technical investments, and long-term decisions around scalability, security, and operability. Lead cross-team architecture and system design for initiatives spanning multiple product pods, services, APIs, data models, and event flows. Define and promote engineering standards for code quality, testing, observability, security, reliability, and long-term maintainability. Remain hands-on by writing meaningful production code, contributing to pull requests, pairing with engineers, and participating in technical reviews. Drive technical strategy in partnership with engineering leadership and product stakeholders, making trade-offs around sequencing, technical debt, platform investments, and system evolution. Create clear technical design documents and RFCs that enable teams to understand, challenge, and execute architectural decisions. Mentor Senior and Mid-level engineers through design reviews, technical pairing, code reviews, and knowledge sharing. Provide technical input into hiring and assessment processes while leaving career development and performance management to engineering managers. Lead or co-lead the response to high-severity incidents affecting systems within your area of influence and ensure durable remediation rather than temporary fixes. Design and improve systems for high availability, security, scalability, performance, and operational excellence. Collaborate with Product, Design, Engineering leadership, and other stakeholders to evaluate feasibility and align technical decisions with business priorities. Identify opportunities to simplify systems, improve developer experience, automate workflows, and introduce technologies that increase engineering effectiveness. Contribute to shared platforms, internal tools, libraries, and AI-assisted engineering workflows where they can create organization-wide impact. Requirements: 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial experience operating as a Senior, Lead, Staff, Principal, or equivalent individual contributor on complex systems. Deep expertise in at least one major technical area, such as backend engineering with Java/Spring Boot, microservices, scalable system design, PostgreSQL/MySQL, NoSQL, Kafka, REST APIs, AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes. Alternatively, strong frontend expertise with React and TypeScript, including component architecture, performance optimization, testing, and modern build and CI tooling. Ability to reason across the full technology stack, even when technical depth is concentrated on either backend or frontend development. Proven experience designing and operating highly available, secure, scalable, and observable production systems. Strong understanding of testing practices, including unit, integration, and contract testing, as well as CI/CD practices such as GitHub Actions. Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality technical designs that can be reviewed, challenged, and implemented by other engineers. Strong influence and leadership skills without relying on formal management authority. Ability to communicate technical trade-offs clearly to Product, Design, engineering leadership, and other stakeholders. Strong product mindset, with the ability to participate in roadmap discussions and assess technical feasibility rather than focusing solely on individual tickets. Intellectual honesty and adaptability, with a willingness to change direction when evidence or new information supports a better approach. Strong mentorship skills and a track record of helping engineering teams become more capable and effective. Strong English communication skills; Spanish is a plus for collaboration across Latin America. Experience in financial applications, payments, or regulated Latin American markets is advantageous. Experience with platform engineering, developer experience initiatives, shared libraries, internal tools, or AI-assisted engineering workflows is desirable. Deep AWS experience, including technologies such as EKS, RDS, or MSK, and/or experience with application security, authentication, or software supply-chain security is a plus.
