Staff Product Manager, OpenTelemetry

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Product Manager, OpenTelemetry based in the United States. This is a Staff-level product leadership role focused on making OpenTelemetry onboarding, instrumentation, and telemetry management simpler, more reliable, and more actionable. You will own the end-to-end customer journey from an uninstrumented workload to healthy, useful telemetry and meaningful observability outcomes. The role spans SDK instrumentation, automatic instrumentation, OpenTelemetry Collectors, configuration, troubleshooting, validation, and downstream product activation. You will shape strategy across multiple engineering and product teams while creating a coherent experience for both developers and AI-powered coding agents. Using customer research, product data, and market insight, you will identify friction points and prioritize improvements that increase activation and time to value. You will work closely with Engineering, Design, Documentation, Developer Relations, Product Marketing, and go-to-market teams in a globally distributed environment. Define the vision, product strategy, and cross-product roadmap for the journey from an uninstrumented workload to healthy, actionable telemetry. Create clear and opinionated experiences that help users select and implement the right instrumentation approach across SDKs, automatic instrumentation, and Collector-based deployments. Identify and address the primary causes of onboarding failure, abandonment, misconfiguration, and poor-quality telemetry. Establish shared product principles, priorities, success criteria, and experience standards across the teams contributing to the OpenTelemetry journey. Use customer research, product analytics, and market insights to prioritize investments and measure outcomes such as onboarding completion, time to useful telemetry, telemetry health, and workload expansion. Partner with downstream observability product teams to create a seamless transition from telemetry ingestion to meaningful product activation and first value. Define how the OpenTelemetry experience is positioned and brought to market in collaboration with Product Marketing and go-to-market teams. Help develop product narratives, differentiation, launches, technical content, adoption programs, and campaigns that accelerate customer activation. Collaborate with Engineering, Design, Documentation, Developer Relations, Product Marketing, and go-to-market teams to deliver a differentiated developer experience. Design experiences and workflows that allow coding agents to implement, configure, troubleshoot, and safely validate instrumentation. Ensure instrumentation options, configuration requirements, errors, and validation signals are structured and discoverable for both human users and AI agents. Represent customer needs and product priorities in relevant OpenTelemetry ecosystem discussions and contribute to the broader ecosystem where appropriate. Use AI tools in day-to-day product work to accelerate customer research synthesis, analyze product signals, prototype experiences, develop positioning, and test agent-led workflows. Requirements 5+ years of Product Management experience, with a strong track record in developer tools, observability, infrastructure, data platforms, or another technically complex B2B product domain. Experience leading strategy and execution across multiple engineering teams or product areas without relying on direct organizational authority. Strong working knowledge of OpenTelemetry, including SDK instrumentation, OTLP, Collector pipelines, telemetry context, and semantic conventions. Experience using or building instrumentation systems, developer agents, telemetry collectors, configuration products, or related infrastructure. Understanding of the challenges involved in deploying and operating software across Kubernetes, virtual machines, and public cloud environments. Experience transforming complex onboarding, configuration, troubleshooting, or technical workflows into clear and approachable product experiences. Strong ability to use customer research and product data to make informed decisions, align stakeholders, and deliver measurable outcomes. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence both technical and nontechnical stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in remote, globally distributed organizations. Strong cross-functional leadership skills and the ability to create alignment across product, engineering, design, marketing, and go-to-market teams. Comfort working with AI tools as part of product development and strategy, while applying sound judgment to AI-generated outputs and recommendations. Bonus Skills & Experience Experience contributing to or building products around OpenTelemetry or the broader open-source observability ecosystem. Experience with automatic instrumentation, eBPF, or runtime-based instrumentation. Firsthand experience as an SRE, platform engineer, developer, or observability practitioner. Experience building product-led onboarding, configuration validation, or telemetry-health experiences at scale. Base compensation range of CAD $211,450–$253,740 , with actual compensation determined by factors such as level, experience, and skillset.
